Historia
Tala had to fight tooth and nail in the Magic Academy to forge a path to power that was her own. She knows it’s her duty to use that power to serve humanity, defending them against the creatures of the untamable wilds. However, she skipped a few steps in her education, like apprenticing to someone who actually knows what they’re doing. Now, Tala has to balance learning as fast as she can with paying off the veritable mountain of debt the Magic Academy dropped on her shoulders for the opportunity; not to mention staying alive.

So subtly good it snuck up and grabbed me
Revisado: 05-02-23
First, the narration was great! Tess brought such a dynamic to the MC, that in my opinion she absolutely nailed it.
Next, the story itself. Honestly I am not a huge fan of 'slice of life' which I feel this falls into. That being said, this is a new favorite of mine! The thought that went into this story to give it life and a fullness without being dull or boring is incredible. The details are enough to paint such a realistic world yet keeps one from drowning in them. The thought and care for the magic system is one of those 'I wish I had thought of that' situations. Just so unique and fresh while having substance behind it.
This was a slow, but not too slow, of a burn that leaves you wanting more. Which I do!!

Awesome, as usual!
Revisado: 01-29-23
The story is fantastic! The pacing is on point as well as the comic relief. Adding in situations most of can relate to helps draw us in as well as care for, or not, the characters. The world building and system building are great.
The narration performance is out of this world! Neil brings to life all the characters as well as the natural pauses that other narrators miss. It feels like you're right there with everything happening all around you. Stellar!

wasn't sure how this concept would be handled having watched the Netflix version first. As is so typical this was so much better!! The twists and turns kept you guessing as to what would happen next. If it hadn't been for knowing that there were more books after, I would have thought it highly probable that the MC could die at the end. Very well written!

He expected nuclear war, a computer virus, or even climate change burning everyone to a crisp to bring about the downfall of civilization. But cruel and arbitrary gods from another world? Who would have guessed that? When these cruel gods shuffled Earth like a deck of cards, nothing was in the same place anymore. Monsters, dungeons, and magical items appear scattered across the globe. And suddenly, everyone has access to a new, strange magical card system that gives them magical powers.

Revisado: 04-27-22
The story itself was really good. I don't understand when people complain about a MC who is growing. The guy is new to the world he finds himself in, but has a sharp mind when he has time to really apply it. He's new to magic and is going to make mistakes, even obvious ones, but that's what makes a great character. We get to watch him grow and learn, all while doing his best. A story very well thought out.
The narration left a lot of room for improvement. There were very obvious points at which narration had stopped and then picked up again. Very distracting as even the pace and inflection changed. If the story hadn't been so compelling, the narrator would have caused me to reconsider even continuing the series. Yet despite the narration, I will continue as I want to know what happens next.

An impactful story!
Revisado: 02-25-22
Okay, so the heading is corny. Yet, that describes this story very well. It is a unique take on the whole vampire genre and well written. I look forward to the next installment. I know very well what my overall rating means in Amazon's screwed up way of doing things, yet I was extremely disappointed by the fact that there were literally 23 minutes of reading credits. There has to be a better way of doing things! Especially given that there were many repeats of people. At times the voices were so low I had to go back and really crank the volume, otherwise I would have missed key dialogue. Other than those two things, listen to this as you shouldn't be disappointed!

Grant Leap is an orphaned, mortal farmhand in a world where cultivation methods and Weapons of Power are jealously guarded and only passed down among family. He’s not content with his lot; as a Januarian, someone living in District January, he should be living the good life just like everyone else. Food, parties, food, entertainment, and food are the minimum requirement. As an orphan, specifically a reviled Leap, there’s not even a chance of being treated as a human.

Fantastic beginning!
Revisado: 07-12-21
The story is fantastic. I read reviews that questioned so about what this book centers on and my response is, did you really listen to it? The MC is the personification of a teenager who thinks he has the world figured out, his place in it, and the path he will take. This is all turned upside as he struggles to figure out just who and what he really is. It goes to show that even with all the percieved planning one can do, the world turns out to be more complicated than once thought. The character interactions and growth are great. A very enjoyable story that I can't wait to see where it goes!!
