Historia
In 1918, Philadelphia was a city teeming with promise. Even as its young men went off to fight in the Great War, there were opportunities for a fresh start on its cobblestone streets. Into this bustling town came Pauline Bright and her husband, filled with hope that they could now give their three daughters - Evelyn, Maggie, and Willa - a chance at a better life. But just months after they arrive, the Spanish flu reaches the shores of America.

Could Have Been So Much More
Revisado: 04-22-25
Felt like the author ended the book because she got sick of writing it. Upcoming big life moments went un-described and referred to in past tense in the next chapter…why? To spare the author from needing to write? And why no major life consequences for any of the daughters?

Historia
For Duffy Sinclair, life boils down to one simple thing: maintaining his residence at the idyllic Centennial Assisted Living. Without it, he’s destined for the roach-infested nursing home down the road. So, he keeps his shenanigans to the bare minimum with the help of his straight-laced best friend and roommate, Carl Upton. But when Carl’s granddaughter Josie climbs through their bedroom window with booze on her breath and a black eye, Duffy’s faced with trouble that’s sticking around and hard to hide.

Revisado: 03-11-25
This novel is so endearing. So many good lessons, and it just makes you think a bit more about this one life we have and how we live it. The narration was great. Laughed & cried.

Historia
Marissa Dahl, a shy but successful film editor, travels to a small island off the coast of Delaware to work with the legendary - and legendarily demanding - director Tony Rees on a feature film with a familiar logline: Some girl dies. It's not much to go on, but the specifics don't concern Marissa. Whatever the script is, her job is the same. She'll spend her days in the editing room, doing what she does best: Turning pictures into stories. But she soon discovers that on this set, nothing is as it's supposed to be - or as it seems.

So close but not enough development
Revisado: 02-20-25
Julia Whelan carries this story. The End. But seriously, there’s SO much potential in this story line, but it’s like someone cut out the middle. Fitting, given the main character is a film editor. There’s not enough plot development. I wanted to love it. I will always love Julia.

Historia
Daphne always loved the way her fiancé Peter told their story. How they met (on a blustery day), fell in love (over an errant hat), and moved back to his lakeside hometown to begin their life together. He really was good at telling it…right up until the moment he realized he was actually in love with his childhood best friend Petra. Which is how Daphne begins her new story.

Probably biased because it took place in Michigan and that’s where I’m from, but I loved this story, and every ounce of its charming predictability.

Historia
Felicia Lyons, a stressed-out stay-at-home mom, struggles to sprint ahead of the demands of motherhood while her husband spends long days at the office. Felicia taps, utters mantras, and breathes her way through most situations, but on some days, like when the children won't stop screaming her name or arguing over toy trucks and pretzel sticks, she wonders what it would be like to get in her car and drive away.

Can’t Reconcile the Main Character
Revisado: 11-23-24
Spoiler Alert
I’ve enjoyed the other books I’ve listened to by this author far more than this one.
I am having a difficult time reconciling the main character’s apparent passion for how much she loves and wants to protect her children with her inability and utter lack of acknowledgement for how an adult man groomed her when she was 14 and sexually abused her. I don’t see how she wouldn’t stop to consider her history with that man from her new POV as a mother. Jumping right back into a sexual relationship with him with no regard for the facts of her situation at a young age…it just doesn’t make sense to me, especially given how wrapped up she is in loving her children.
And then there’s the huge lie by omission when she & her husband get back together. Don’t even get me started. The author wrapped it up at that point because she knew she’d crafted something that wouldn’t close out nicely had all the truth come out.

This was intriguing, if not somewhat confusing at times. It’s well written, and the narrator is good. But to be honest, it’s just kind of boring.

Could Have Been Longer
Revisado: 09-07-24
I feel like the author wrapped this one up because she was exhausted, and I think this book easily could have been longer and dived into the outcome more deeply. But I get it. My only gripes are: 1) the car accident that Noelle gets into…ain’t no way somebody could have “ pulled a phone out of their pocket in the early 90s; and 2) the narrator for Noelle was awful.

The writing in this novel is unreal. It literally paints a picture, it’s amazing. I loved this book. The only thing I didn’t like was how many chapters there were. 262 is excessive.

Endearing Characters
Revisado: 07-17-24
I enjoyed this listen. It was very emotional, and sometimes it was over the top, but on the whole it was a good story. I wish more had been done with Josh’s birth father, and I wonder what Kristin Higgins has against Catholicism (she totally digs on Catholicism in her books, it’s weird).
