Historia
The Pity of War makes a simple and provocative argument: the human atrocity known as the Great War was entirely England's fault. According to Niall Ferguson, England entered into war based on naive assumptions of German aims, thereby transforming a Continental conflict into a world war, which it then badly mishandled, necessitating American involvement. The war was not inevitable, Ferguson argues, but rather was the result of the mistaken decisions of individuals who would later claim to have been in the grip of huge impersonal forces.

Fresh insights and obliterating old assumptions
Revisado: 09-27-24
This is an excellent analysis and commentary on well studied topic of World War I,, that has shaped much of the 20th and 21st centuries.
The economic, social, and cultural examinations, were particularly surprising, and engaging.
The author succeeded in overcoming the common temptation of coloring WWI with the subsequent WW II, making the space for a clearer analysis of cause and effects.
Thank you, Niall Ferguson, for a great book.

The Thirty Years War devastated seventeenth-century Europe, killing nearly a quarter of all Germans and laying waste to towns and countryside alike. Peter Wilson offers the first new history in a generation of a horrifying conflict that transformed the map of the modern world.

Poorly written, too many factual errors.
Revisado: 08-14-24
History can be engaging, this was not. I found too many errors in the narrative, I lived in Europe and have family that is from areas affected by the conflict, it was annoying to hear so many errors. After 20 hours of listening, hoping it would get better, I quit the book.

Historia
In 1929 Stalin launched his policy of agricultural collectivization - in effect a second Russian Revolution - which forced millions of peasants off their land and onto collective farms. The result was a catastrophic famine, the most lethal in European history. At least five million people died between 1931 and 1933 in the USSR. But instead of sending relief, the Soviet state made use of the catastrophe to rid itself of a political problem.

Epic Primer on Russia vs Ukraine
Revisado: 04-10-24
The author, Anne Applebaum, a leading expert on Eastern Europe. The focus of the book is the great famine of 1932-1933 in Ukraine, the author provides outstanding and well written background on the events leading to and following the famine. The famine becomes a microcosm of Russian policy against Ukraine. The book is insightful and well narrated, with many sources and side stories, creating educational and entertaining experience of the most significant events in the 20th century, which affects present moment disproportionate way.

Historia
Approximately 200,000 years ago, as modern humans began to radiate out from their evolutionary birthplace in Africa, Neanderthals were already thriving in Europe - descendants of a much earlier migration of the African genus Homo. But when modern humans eventually made their way to Europe 45,000 years ago, Neanderthals suddenly vanished.

Historia
Disasters are inherently hard to predict. Pandemics, like earthquakes, wildfires, financial crises. and wars, are not normally distributed; there is no cycle of history to help us anticipate the next catastrophe. But when disaster strikes, we ought to be better prepared than the Romans were when Vesuvius erupted, or medieval Italians when the Black Death struck. We have science on our side, after all.
