Historia
Wright Thompson’s family farm in Mississippi is 23 miles from the site of one of the most notorious and consequential killings in American history, yet he had to leave the state for college before he learned the first thing about it. To this day, fundamental truths about the crime are widely unknown, including where it took place and how many people were involved. This is no accident: the cover-up began at once, and it is ongoing.

Excellent read
Revisado: 01-22-25
The author has crafted an outstanding novel that vividly describes Mississippi from the perspective of a native who lived near the barn where Emmett Till was tortured and killed.
Growing up, he remained unaware of the horrific details surrounding the killing, but his compelling writing style and meticulous presentation of facts create a powerful narrative of the region's history. He delves into the removal of Indigenous peoples through astute American ancestry research, demonstrating their connection to the land, leading to the present-day landscape of integration.
The author unearths the corporations that historically dominated the land for agricultural profit, exploiting slave labor, and illustrates how this has contributed to the evolution of a segregated democracy reliant on sharecropping.
With impressive depth, his research unveils the fabric of a white supremacist-designed society, revealing a culture intertwined with delusions that allowed for the abduction, torture, and murder of a child in Mississippi. This event became a pivotal moment during the Civil Rights Movement.
As I read, I felt a profound connection to the author; my father was born and raised in Gunnison, MS, near Shelby, where the author's relative was known.
Our family of five visited Mississippi only for funerals, typically leaving after dark. Since my father's passing, I have traveled the roads he spoke of in this novel and understand why visits to family in Mississippi were off-limits.
I hold a deep respect for the African Americans who sought escape from the oppressive realities of the Jim Crow South.
Excellent Novel and must read.

Historia
World War II was raging, with thousands of American soldiers fighting overseas against the injustices brought on by Hitler. Back on the home front, the injustice of discrimination against African Americans was playing out as much on Main Street as in the military. Enlisted black men were segregated from white soldiers and regularly relegated to service duties. At Fort Benning, Georgia, First Sergeant Walter Morris’s men served as guards at The Parachute School while the white soldiers prepared to be paratroopers.

Revisado: 09-04-24
As a child of eight or nine, I would have been captivated by this well-written novel's meticulous research and significant details. The author's in-depth exploration of America's segregation policies before, during, and after World War 2 is enlightening and intriguing.
The author's deep respect for the courageous men of the Triple Nickle, who are the bedrock foundation of what being an American citizen is like, is evident. Their resilience and survival in a time when America did not want to acknowledge their presence is a testament to the human spirit.
I rated the novel five stars based on the author's delivery of the research she conducted and her detailed explanation of her process.
Excellent Novel.

Historia
With no camping or RV experience, author Sue Ann Jaffarian decided to chuck her life in Los Angeles for a life on the road in a van. Newly retired from her long-time career as a paralegal, she got rid of most of her belongings, packed up her laptop, and embraced a new adventure of traveling the country and writing full-time, adding travel writing to her career as a popular mystery novelist. Not always sunshine and unicorns, her experiences gave her more self-reliance, a new appreciation of nature, and a love for the quirky, interesting, and thought-provoking.

Revisado: 08-21-24
As a fellow nomadic traveler and aspiring writer, my connection to the author gives me a unique perspective to review her memoir. Her account of the nomadic lifestyle is inspirational and deeply resonates with my own experiences.
For anyone of any age who is considering the travel lifestyle, this novel covers the details and aspects of just about every human emotion, friendships, and the highs and lows of travel, along with alternate ways to take breaks from traveling, destinations, gatherings of like-minded nomadic travelers, being productive as a digital nomad, the awareness of weather, preparation, vehicle maintenance, and the author's definition of itchy-wheels.
This memoir is a great tool to educate the family and friends of anyone who travels, easing their fears and concerns with humorous moments of life.
I highlighted many of the author's quotes, which can be read on her Good Reads site.
For me, every one of her quotes was deeply inspirational, to resonate and define almost every aspect of our nomadic lifestyle I embraced wholeheartedly and will continue forever.
The novel is now available in Audible format and is very entertaining.

Historia
Red Tails, George Lucas’s celebration of America’s first Black flying squadron, the Tuskegee Airmen, should have been a moment of victory for Doug Melville. He expected to see his great-uncle Benjamin O. Davis Jr.—the squadron’s commander—immortalized on-screen for his selfless contributions to America. But as the film rolled, Doug was shocked when he realized that Ben Jr.’s name had been omitted and replaced by the fictional Colonel A. J. Bullard. And Ben’s father, Benjamin O. Davis Sr., America’s first Black general who helped integrate the military, was left out completely.

Essential American Black History
Revisado: 12-28-23
I thoroughly enjoyed this novel, which became a pleasurable, joyous reading journey, with such a positive, enlightening story about the Invisible Generals, whom I knew so little about.
I was educated about the names because of the Black History Month teaching I received in elementary school.
However, the author presented an incredible historical account of the first two American Black four-star military generals.
The author is a first-time novelist who is an excellent storyteller and has produced an excellent work of historical knowledge, inspiring anyone and everyone who reads this novel to become inspired, filled with gratitude, and humbled with his words of wisdom to seek and cultivate a mindful understanding of diversity and inclusion within our world.

A romantic love
Revisado: 06-17-22
The power of words, poetic words, is genuinely displayed as the author describes the soul-touching sparks of a love story ignited between two people.
A nomadic photographer encounters an Iowa housewife whose measured and conservative routine life is given a chance at a soul-stirring romance. A romance many readers can only imagine, while others believe such a love could not exist.
The idea of continuing their romantic love affair becomes a heart-wrenching decision knowing two have become one. Yet, their life journeys can only be determined when you finish reading the novel.
I have viewed the excellent movie. But, the novel provides a mental context of unique romantic love.
The novel is an excellent read for lovers of romantic stories.

Powerful, direct and straight forward
Revisado: 06-09-22
"Finding Me" is a verbally straightforward, emotionally powerful personal enlightenment memoir of the author's life fraught with mental and physical struggles to persevere and fulfill her dedication to her acting career as a dark-skinned Black Woman.
During my lifetime of viewing television and movies, I have always noticed the racially biased portrayals of dark skin black women actors.
The author draws upon the reality of her personal life struggles to become a successful award-winning actor on stage, on television, and in movies.
Any reader who aspires to accel in any career will draw inspiration from her life story. The author's directness comes through in the audio version with deeply felt emotions that will resonate with any listener.
This is an excellent memoir of the inspiration of life's journey because life keeps moving along.

The New York Times Magazine’s award-winning “1619 Project” issue reframed our understanding of American history by placing slavery and its continuing legacy at the center of our national narrative. This new book substantially expands on that work, weaving together 18 essays that explore the legacy of slavery in present-day America with 36 poems and works of fiction that illuminate key moments of oppression, struggle, and resistance.

Researched and documented
Revisado: 05-01-22
I'm going to be biased with my review because of my love of history.
This novel contains comprehensive, researched, and detailed, insightful knowledge of America's history of its enslaved peoples.
The poetry within this novel will inspire, educate and encourage readers with little or no knowledge of America's history with the enslavement of humans.
The people who fear reading this novel deny America's historical documented truths revealing European ancestors, who escaped religious persecution to colonize lands occupied by indigenous people to enslave humans, is their personal embarrassment.
The research documents identify leaders and organizers of colonization who used indentured servants and then enslaved people to build and acquire profits to become the country's foundation while claiming freedoms from its benefactors.
I'm sorry, as I digress with my opinionated ideology commentary about early American history.
However, this novel contains a treasure trove collection of knowledgeable specific reading details of American history that define the word "systemic" as it applies to the enslaved people and why racial problems still exist in America.
This is an excellent novel with its collections of researched information to educate the reader.
Someday, this novel and its collection of documents will become part of mandatory reading for American citizenship and US education in private and public school systems.
For me, this was and is an excellent five-star audible read/listen.

My Face in White Spaces
Revisado: 03-08-22
The novel was a read revealing the academic research of the author about the environment and the lack of representation to include America's people of color.
The entire marketing of the US National Parks, Monuments, and environmental movements was never an inclusive-themed American idea for people of color.
Since I began touring National Parks and Monuments as an African-American over thirty years ago, the author specifically defined my beliefs since I started traveling around the US, via motorcycle, by overlanding vehicle, and currently by RV.
There was a time when I would encounter no more than one or two other African-Americans in a National Park or Monument on a two or three-week trip outside of the National Parks in the DC metro area.
Once on a tour of the Grand Canyon, I encountered a young African-American woman and her mother. We were so joyous to see one another as we talked about the magnificent scenery we shared. Then we discussed the lack of African Americans visiting the National Parks.
I have encountered many experiences with my children and myself witnessing the surprise of White Americans seeing a dark skin single black man pull off his motorcycle helmet or walk into their business, being their first encounter with any person of color other than seeing one on television.
However, in the past ten years, with the increase in African-Americans and people of color touring National Parks and Monuments, I now encounter 3-5 African-Americans at a time.
In particular, on the hiking trails, many young black and brown people have backpacked the three famous long-distance routes, and outdoor magazines and podcasts have highlighted them to show their diversity in recognizing their achievements.
In the novel, I have highlighted significant comments the author made about the fears established by White Supremacists who terrorized my ancestors and other people of color into believing traveling across the US was not for them.
On many occasions during my travels, I have encountered indigenous people for whom we occupy the lands of their ancestors.
They have been excluded from American history along with the historical knowledge that every signed treaty has been violated as corporations profited from their stolen lands with the knowledge and blessing of the US government and its politicians.
The author's detailed research reveals the hypocrisies and problems with ideas for solutions for the National Parks Service as attempts at diversifying their organization are ongoing.
This novel is a must-read for all tax-paying American citizens to explore the US National Parks and Monuments. Every destination reveals America's historical hypocrisies and is an integral source of mental health for the mind, body, and soul.
"Broadening the environmental movement to include the great diversity of the national population requires a full reckoning with this history."
