Historia
Charles Tremayne is a spy out of his time. After a long career spent rescuing prisoners from the KGB or helping defectors across the Berlin Wall, the world has changed. The Wall has gone, and no longer is there a need for a Russian-speaking ice-cold killer. Nowadays, state secrets are transmitted via satellite using impenetrable blowfish algorithms. Counting down the days to his retirement by babysitting drunken visiting politicos, he is seconded by MI6 for one last case.

I know I really loved the bank of godliness, and I also really loved The Farmhouse Five Go Quizzing. In this book, I found the characters in the town less charming that I was supposed to have. I didn’t like the people I was supposed to root for, and it was a bit more violent than I anticipated, having just finished the farmhouse five

This book is a standalone, and it was a lovely setting with inventive and interesting characters and a unique storyline. It would be so nice to live in this world and hang out with this team to solve puzzles. Very cool idea. I was definitely in need of a pleasant escape, and listening to this book surely did that for me! I am downloading another book from this author now …

Historia
English magicians were once the wonder of the known world, with fairy servants at their beck and call; they could command winds, mountains, and woods. But by the early 1800s they have long since lost the ability to perform magic. They can only write long, dull papers about it, while fairy servants are nothing but a fading memory.

Much too long. Pretty scattered, too — sometimes hard to follow. Many details that are irrelevant.

Historia
Relentless phone calls interrupt the peace of a warm August morning in Three Pines. Though the tiny Québec village is impossible to find on any map, someone has managed to track down Armand Gamache, head of homicide at the Sûreté, as he sits with his wife in their back garden. Reine-Marie watches with increasing unease as her husband refuses to pick up, though he clearly knows who is on the other end. When he finally answers, his rage shatters the calm of their quiet Sunday morning.

Not as good as the others, and I didn’t like the narration
Revisado: 11-26-24
This time the suspension of disbelief was too much: the clues were too obtuse to read and to stake everything on, and the lack of nobody being forthcoming at all and speaking in riddles was annoying and unrealistic. I mean, I know the books aren’t meant to be super realistic – but they usually hold together more. And the cliffhanger was a disappointing surprise because that means I know what the next book is about and I’m less interested in that topic. By the time we’re this far along in a series we don’t really need a cliffhanger to make sure we come back– i’d prefer a whole new story next time. And lastly, although I realize this makes me sound very complainy, which I’m not usually (I think I gave five stars to the last several books) — I wish the narration wouldn’t keep changing. I understand that the first gentleman died, and I was very grieved to hear that, because he was the voice of inspector Gamache. I came to like the second narrator, who was also very good in his own way. I was so disappointed to have the voices and personalities of my characters change with a new narrator who interprets phrases a little differently than I would have or than the other narrators probably would have. I have a consistent set of characters in my head and it messes with it when the narration keeps changing. I just wasn’t a fan of the story or narration this time.

Historia
The adventuring industry drives the economy of Arth, a world much like our own but with more magic and fewer vowels. Monsters' hoards are claimed, bought by corporate interests, and sold off to plunder funds long before the Heroes' Guild actually kills the beasts. Of course, that's a terrible arrangement for the Shadowkin; orcs, goblins, kobolds, and their ilk must apply for to become Noncombatant Paper Carriers (or NPCs) to avoid being killed and looted by heroes.

Outstanding
Revisado: 12-21-22
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and learned a lot. I highly recommend it. It’s very, very easy to listen to, injecting humor into a topic that is quite worrisome, but it does far more than that: it paints a picture of how we got here and concludes with absolutely sound advice for the path going forward.

A great book to keep a person company
Revisado: 11-29-20
I enjoy this book a lot. Central to the book, and highlighted by the outstanding reader, are people, their histories, and their personalities. Not central to The book are explosions, crashes, police pursuits, or fight scenes; I’m so glad. There are reasons to become deeply concerned about these friends of yours, but it’s a character-driven story rather than an adrenaline-driven story, and I enjoyed it very much.
