Historia
On an entirely normal, beautiful fall day in Chester's Mill, Maine, the town is inexplicably and suddenly sealed off from the rest of the world by an invisible force field. Planes crash into it and fall from the sky in flaming wreckage, a gardener's hand is severed as "the dome" comes down on it, people running errands in the neighboring town are divided from their families, and cars explode on impact. No one can fathom what this barrier is, where it came from, and when - or if - it will go away.

This is pure, 100-proof Stephen King
Revisado: 12-30-09
This is Stephen King at the top of his game. The trademark King character-handling is there, with flawed good-guys and truly heinous bad-guys and a few you aren't sure are which. The plot is outre enough for the genre while being just possible enough to be truly frightening, and the story shows how people rise or fall to their best or worst under extreme conditions. All of it is handled with King's wonderfully engaging narrative voice and smooth transitions of viewpoint. As if to make the treat complete, Raul Esparza is a wonderful narrator, with voices that make each character come alive. The only problem with this book is that it will be a very long time before I hear something this completely satisfying again.

Great book, terrible narrator
Revisado: 07-08-09
I loved this book but listening to this particular narrator was painful. He put nearly the same inflection on every sentence, so that he always sounded as if he were reading the exciting line of a kid's book. If Follet weren't so good, I couldn't have kept going.

Historia
English magicians were once the wonder of the known world, with fairy servants at their beck and call; they could command winds, mountains, and woods. But by the early 1800s they have long since lost the ability to perform magic. They can only write long, dull papers about it, while fairy servants are nothing but a fading memory.

A lovely book made better by perfect narration
Revisado: 02-15-08
The narrative in this delightful tale is already rich with the charm of the Regency period of a fanciful alternate England. The audiobook adds the talents of a skilled and versatile narrator who brings every character uniquely to life. The combination is a rare treat.

Buckley is at the top of his game
Revisado: 04-15-06
This is Christopher Buckley at his best. This witty, funny and all-too-nearly-true political satire reveals the lies and crimes that are the earmarks of American Middle-East policy. At the same time, we get characters who are funny and sympathetic, realistic and archtypical at the same time.
The narration is terrific, with different voices, accents and cadences for each character. There is never any doubt who is speaking, and the pace and delivery is first-rate. I recommend this to anyone who enjoys Christopher Buckley or good political satire.

Historia
Winter is coming. Such is the stern motto of House Stark, the northernmost of the fiefdoms that owe allegiance to King Robert Baratheon in far-off King's Landing. There Eddard Stark of Winterfell rules in Robert's name. Far to the north, behind the towering Wall, lie savage Wildings and worse - unnatural things relegated to myth during the centuries-long summer, but proving all too real and all too deadly in the turning of the season. Yet a more immediate threat lurks to the south, where Jon Arryn, the Hand of the King, has died under mysterious circumstances....

Possibly the Best Books Ever
Revisado: 10-04-05
This book and its two sequels, A Clash of Kings and A Storm of Swords, were simply the best audio books I have heard in three years as an Audible member. The writing is incredible, the characters real and well-realized, the narration brilliant. At over 36 hours a book unabridged, they were a feast for the ears and the imagination. It is not too much to say that George R.R. Martin could teach J.R.R. Tolkein a thing or two about epic fantasy.
The books are so good I went out and bought them in large-format paperback just to own them, because I wanted the author to have more of my money. I will listen to these again.

The divers, realizing the momentousness of their discovery, began probing the mystery. Over the next six years, they became expert and well-traveled researchers, taught themselves German, hunted for clues in Germany, and constructed theories corrective of the history books, all in an effort to identify this sunken U-boat and its crew.

Absolutely Gripping
Revisado: 12-04-04
This was a gripping story, well-written and expertly narrated. I could barely stand to stop listening when I reached my destination. It was the sort of book where you talk out loud at some parts, saying things like "oh no!" and "wow!" as the book unfolds. I was riveted to my Audible player.

Historia
Tremendous in scope, breathtaking in its suspense, Atlas Shrugged is Ayn Rand's magnum opus, which launched an ideology and a movement. With the publication of this work in 1957, Rand gained an instant following and became a phenomenon. Atlas Shrugged emerged as a premier moral apologia for capitalism, a defense that had an electrifying effect on millions of readers (and now listeners) who have never heard capitalism defended in other than technical terms.

Possibly the most important book ever written
Revisado: 06-14-04
This is the book I'd take if I were to be marooned on an island with only one thing to read. Brilliant, thought-provoking, demanding, and challenging, this book detail's Rand's entire vision for what humanity CAN and SHOULD be.
The audio version is wonderful, well read and produced. I had to buy a paper copy so I could keep reading when I couldn't listen, and I have re-read and re-listened twice.
One caveat--Rand NEVER talks down. Be prepared to USE your brain if you pick up this title.

The best way to learn a new language
Revisado: 11-10-03
Pimsleur is a genius. These lessons make learning French so painless I am planning to buy the full course and become fluent, because now I know I can. This course works very well to help you learn to hear, to pronounce correctly and to speak naturally, but it is never tedious. The repetition always seems to come in just when you need it, just the amount you need, then it is on to new material that comes at a perfect pace. It may seem like a cliche, but it really does feel almost effortless. Learning French has become enjoyable, and I plan to try Italian and German someday too. Look out Europe, here I come!
