This book was good, a departure from earlier books in the series as it was more introspective. I quite enjoyed it.

This is one of those series that, once I'm done, I'm going to have to go back through again.

Dennis really tidies up the explanation of the world building that Dakota started, and makes it all make sense as he slowly transitions from the rules of the old world into the rules of the new, and I think that this book is mostly about that -- building up a transition. It's great listening to it.

This book came out in a time when I was burning the candle at both ends doing something I felt unqualified for -- co-founder of an education company.

Much of the fantasy genre is derivative of Tolkien, but Dakota brings in aspects of both classic and new Russian literature, table top gaming, base building of an RTS, and Japanese gamer culture. It's taken me years of studying into literature to finally be able to understand a fraction of the significance of the elements that went into his style,

The most important aspect to this book, however, is the attention to detail, that makes this book, even alone, a complete work. You'll be hooked by the first page, and probably have bought the next three before the first one is done.

The world advances, and the Jim gains power. It's a thoroughly enjoyable read.

Jim is constantly pushing people he cares about away, because he's afraid to be real with them, have real emotional availability. He's good at meeting people and making friends, but bad at keeping real relationships with people. Jim seems jealous that his companions are able to live their lives, while telling himself that he's responsible for their continued survival.

I started out reading this series for the progression and story, but Jim's mental health is turning out to be very interesting.

I also loved the red shirt reference to Star Trek.

As with his previous book, the combat is excellent -- grounded in real understanding of movement, but using magic.

Something most writers screw up on is the sense that the writer has a plan for the characters, but the author leaves us with clues on what the bigger direction will be, while at the same time leaving a lot left to be discovered.

The way the author paced the power growth of the character is slow enough that he's not becoming too powerful at once.

The way the book starts off, the way the main character is introduced, is absolutely incredible.

When I see a "save the world" plot, my first reaction is the same as most people's -- I cringe.

Nope, not this one. The reason for why he has to do what he has to do, and how he screwed up to get there are actually real motivations people would have.

The combat makes sense, and the planning makes sense. The best thing about this book are the combat scenes, because despite the fact that they're grounded in an understanding of the economy of movement, the focus is on the magic.

It takes a little while to get past the tutorial and heavy exposition, but this book, once it gets up to speed, is VERY dark, but funny book, something that I haven't seen since reading the Drizzt DND books. The aspects of horror combined with LitRPG make for an experience akin to somebody playing Silent Hill in your head, but it doesn't get too scary so much that I'm uncomfortable continuing.

The writer's style is unusually explicit -- as in detailed, not as in implicit content, which leads to a style that sounds like a good dungeon master, which makes me wonder if a lot of lit RPG authors got their start with tabletop games. Eventually the main character's companion feels like an extension of the interface, which makes for large sections of content feel paranoia and isolation.

Christian Gilliland was an excellent narrator, and the audio effects were interesting, but not overused.

Without spoiling it, but the relationship between the main character and his first love interest is intense and dark. I loved the expansive universe.

Dakota's writing has evolved in this novel to be more similar to his style previously in Something, but has improved from there. Surprisingly, the pacing and character development are significantly better from his last published work, and Joe as a character has been mildly nerfed in order to create a more balanced universe. The plot moves along at a comfortable pace, and the new characters in this world of dwarves and elves were given some space without the all of the characters of previous installments, and the overall plot has taken a step into the more general space of epic fantasy, and has done so very well, showing that DK has big, exciting plans for the future of his books, as well as his publishing company. Cal takes a bigger role in this book, and that was exciting. Luke Daniels' narration, in previous installments, had been amazing, and has improved overall. This is not the best in the series, but lays groundwork for a real universe of writing in and of itself.

This book falls heavy onto dialogue. Dialogue is used as an alternative to world building, which is worsened by the overall pacing. Too fast.

This book feels like an enjoyable game of DND with friends; none of the characters are likeable or really that interesting.

I'm really impressed by this narrator.

This book is as good as the first, and that's a compliment. The author is taking his time moving towards the character's end goals, while setting up future books with interesting open loops. There are so many open loops that can be closed in future books -- the final dungeons, the history of gaia, his guide's guild.

I'm just hoping that this series continues, and Rockland Barclay doesn't become overly powered.

Luke Daniels is the king as always.
