Historia
In the midst of what should be an effulgent time of life, with its days bright with music, family, and rowing on the Seine, Jules is confronted headlong and all at once by a series of challenges to his principles, livelihood, and home, forcing him to grapple with his complex past and find a way forward. He risks fraud to save his terminally ill infant grandson, matches wits with a renegade insurance investigator, is drawn into an act of savage violence, and falls deeply, excitingly in love with a young cellist who is a third his age.

Beautiful, funny, complicated, romantic, clever, sad.
Revisado: 05-04-25
The writing is beautifully descriptive and characters drawn so clearly you almost know them.
Feels a little disjointed at first but then all the pieces fall into place. Love the French accents. The reader makes all characters distinguishable by their voices. I really enjoyed listening to this book.

Deeply moving novel about compassion and forgiveness.
We learn by making mistakes. sadly, some people don’t get compassion and forgiveness and don’t get to the opportunity to try again.

Not my favorite Zadie Smith. Some interesting topics but mostly she seems to be reviewing people or events I’ve never heard of.

Worth reading if you are fascinated by evolution and things botanical
Revisado: 09-12-23
A little tedious in the beginning but gets better and better, especially if you also have a fascination with the history of Darwins theories and a love of plants.
Historical views of love, marriage and sex are also revealed.
The protagonist is truly likable.

You may "know" Jenny Slate from her Netflix special, Stage Fright, as the creator of Marcel the Shell, or as the star of Obvious Child. But you don't really know Jenny Slate until you get bonked on the head by her absolutely singular writing style. To see the world through Jenny's eyes is to see it as though for the first time, shimmering with strangeness and possibility.

I can’t get past the first few chapters. I would return it if I could.

Historia
Her name was Henrietta Lacks, but scientists know her as HeLa. She was a poor Southern tobacco farmer who worked the same land as her slave ancestors, yet her cells - taken without her knowledge - became one of the most important tools in medicine: The first “immortal” human cells grown in culture, which are still alive today, though she has been dead for more than 60 years. HeLa cells were vital for developing the polio vaccine; uncovered secrets of cancer, viruses, and the atom bomb’s effects.

An amazing way to discover Paris
Revisado: 01-27-23
Disappointing only because, as an audible book, it was hard to keep track of dates and characters as the author skipped back and forth in time.
Fascinating to learn the history of Paris through the generational stories of families that lived there and how their paths crossed; the wars, the politics, the lives of famous painters, writers and courtesans, the building of the Eiffel tower and Sacré Coeur etc., and an insight to the lives of the poor to the aristocracy through the centuries.
The fact that I just spent a week visiting Paris really enriched my visual understanding of the book, but the book invoked a desire to return and see the many places I missed. Meanwhile the various family intrigues and romances and their political and artistic involvements, whether factionalized or true, made the book all the more captivating.
