I struggled to finish this one. The characters are bad stereotypes lightly brushed with mundane reality and stuck in high school conflicts. be smart and don't waste your money here.

it's pretty bad

I couldn't finish it. The totaltarian villians are so inept at basic interpersonal skills as to completely break suspension of disbelief. It's hammering with ideology.

Bland characters. The most interesting character is the ship but the story drags on too far once it leaves the focus. Too many great story elements are abandoned too soon or executed poorly.

I'm copying my introduction of the book from a rationalism subreddit:

Okay I'll be honest I asked someone here[there] if they were published and didn't announce it when this showed up in my recommended buys on amazon. I'm about 50%[since done] through and it is a delight to read something targeted directly at my flair.The good:

Characterization. Humor similar to ready player one (very Trek influenced). Reasonable approaches for being a copy-clan. Passages through the Void concepts being treated with in public media. Uploaded cryonicist is the protagonist.


The not so good: Light on the physics porn, some of the problem solving is treated as drudgery and glossed over, some YMMV cringey straw man treatment of religion and YMMV unlikely dystopian assumptions to set up the scenario.

a very weak ending tainted with strawman politics

I was disappointed. We are discussing the last book and devoured them in under a week. the last ending however, well either it's a inept parody or a strawman. It broke my suspension of disbelief and enjoyment.
