Historia
On the day her first book came out—a new translation of Dark Night of the Soul by Saint John of the Cross—Mirabai Starr’s daughter, Jenny, was killed in a car accident. “My spiritual life began the day my daughter died,” writes Mirabai. Even with decades of spiritual practice and a deep immersion in the greatest mystical texts, she found herself utterly unprepared for “my most powerful catalyst for transformation, my fiercest and most compassionate teacher.”

Loved it
Revisado: 03-29-25
I really enjoyed this story so much. From the love of a young woman for an older woman who had loved her as a child, guided her through her teens and into adult hood, and the discovery of a life she had no idea had existed until after the passing of her adopted grandmother. It’s a wonderful story.

Historia
Wildly different half sisters Maggie, Simone, and Star have hardly seen one another since their sprightly summers at Rowan Thorp, their eccentric father Augustus’s home. Known for his bustling approach to the knick-knack shop he ran, Augustus was loved by all and known by none, not even his daughters. Now, years later, the three estranged women are called upon for the reading of Augustus’s will and quickly realize he's orchestrated a series of hoops through which they must jump to unlock their inheritance.

Just wonderful
Revisado: 03-29-25
I was so ready and wanting to read something light and easy, something hopeful. No devastating scary thing hiding waiting to jump out of the story and drag you into the anxiety of the events on the page.
This story fills the bill. It’s just wonderful. It paints a community you wish you lived in, people you wish were your community. Get some good something to snack on, ignore things that you “ should” be doing, and just enjoy having this book read to you.

The lessons are great
Revisado: 02-20-25
Even though the basis of the story is really good,
BUT…I almost didn’t finish.
Clover is so pathetic for a 30 something woman.
Her constant on and on about she didn’t know if the call she got to have coffee was a date, was it business, what if she made a mistake, was the kiss right, on and on over everything. Her self centered tantrums, over stupid stuff, her constant indecision, her constant needing to ask her friend if what she was doing,or did or going to possibly do was right or wrong. I understand mourning, I’ve lost two children, but her incessant wishing for grandpa, was more like the personality of a very young and immature 13 or 14 year old. A very spoiled, self aggrandizing
Self portrait of being a death dula just started wearing on me about 2/3 the way through the book.
But the basis of the story itself was really good. It was good enough to get me past the antagonism of the character of clover.
I’d recommend this book, it has a wonderful message, and all the other characters are so good. Give it a try, very possibly you’ll feel differently about clover.

It was just ok. It didn’t hold any depth to it. There wasn’t anything there to help with the being an elder, and having to navigate not only another “new” stage of life, but possibly the the one we realize we navigate alone.
I was disappointed, but maybe life itself is the only teacher/guide through this lad 1/3.

Just to much
Revisado: 11-24-24
After the 3 rd chapter, it just became to much dark. I kept listening until about ch 7 and had to skip to 14, then farther… the whole story was just so dark, the ppl were to conniving and in my mind all I saw were these characters dragging around, in filth and gloom.
I skipped to the end just to see if he got home, and in the prolog when Gaimen started up again I shut it off.
It was just to much depressive everything.

Historia
Neil Gaiman has long been inspired by ancient mythology in creating the fantastical realms of his fiction. Now he turns his attention back to the source, presenting a bravura rendition of the great northern tales. In Norse Mythology, Gaiman fashions primeval stories into a novelistic arc that begins with the genesis of the legendary nine worlds; delves into the exploits of the deities, dwarves, and giants; and culminates in Ragnarok, the twilight of the gods and the rebirth of a new time and people.
