Couldn’t finish it
Revisado: 09-08-24
Awkward translation, convoluted story made me lose the mood to finish the series. Had high hopes for it, but other books beckon.

Historia
After two years and seven months biding her time on Anima, her home ark, it is finally time to act, to put what she has discovered in the Book of Faruk to use. Under an assumed identity, Ophelia travels to Babel, a cosmopolitan and thoroughly modern ark that is the jewel of the universe. Will her talent as a reader suffice to avoid being lured into a deadly trap by her ever more fearful adversaries? Will she ever see Thorn, her betrothed, again?

Occasionally awkward translation choices e.g. turning off lights “plunged the room into semi- obscurity”

Nice world building, with convincing belief systems for each “ark”- often brutal, and always class based

Historia
Rife with the indulgent pleasures of life among New York’s one-percenters, Pineapple Street is a smart, escapist novel that sparkles with wit. Full of recognizable, loveable—if fallible—characters, it’s about the peculiar unknowability of someone else’s family, the miles between the haves and have-nots, and the insanity of first love—all wrapped in a story that is a sheer delight.

Love to hate some of these characters
Revisado: 05-23-23
Marin Ireland is one of my favorite narrators, and she doesn’t disappoint here. The story is as expected, with convincing depictions of “one percenters” that I loved to hate. Enjoyable

Historia
Audie Award, Multi-Voiced Performance, 2016. The year is 2575, and two rival mega-corporations are at war over a planet that's little more than an ice-covered speck at the edge of the universe. Too bad nobody thought to warn the people living on it. With enemy fire raining down on them, Kady and Ezra - who are barely even talking to each other - are forced to fight their way onto one of the evacuating fleet, with an enemy warship in hot pursuit.

What did you love best about Illuminae?
The production with full cast was beautifully done. This one of the best of 2015.

Historia
In pitch-perfect voices, Kathryn Stockett creates three extraordinary women whose determination to start a movement of their own forever changes a town, and the way women—mothers, daughters, caregivers, friends—view one another. A deeply moving novel filled with poignancy, humor, and hope, The Help is a timeless and universal story about the lines we abide by, and the ones we don't.

Excellent story; wonderful narrators
Revisado: 03-24-09
The talented narrators make a good story a great audiobook experience. Jackson, Missippi in 1962 is brought to life on both sides of the color divide as black maids speak about their experiences working for their "white ladies". The southern accents are dead-on: my family is from the south, so I can spot a fake!

Historia
English magicians were once the wonder of the known world, with fairy servants at their beck and call; they could command winds, mountains, and woods. But by the early 1800s they have long since lost the ability to perform magic. They can only write long, dull papers about it, while fairy servants are nothing but a fading memory.

Richly imaginative
Revisado: 02-02-05
I find it difficult to believe that this is Clarke's first novel; her imagery is lovely, and although long, the book holds up for the entire listen. Clarke so seamlessly weaves an alternate magical history with actual events of the 18th century (complete with faux footnotes) that I couldn't put it down- or rather, couldn't turn it off. The novel is probably best heard for longer stretches at a time, but was well worth the commitment.
