Well-written and excellently performed by the narrator. If you have any interest in the ancient conflict between Persia and Greece, this is the perfect was to learn about it. My only complaint is that a PDF with some maps and perhaps a list of the key characters would have made this perfect. As it was, Wikipedia proved sufficient to support this deficiency.

I’m surprised to see others distressed by the key theme that innovation thrives in freedom. The evidence appears overwhelming. It is acknowledged that some areas, such as drugs, need some measures to assure quacks don’t proliferate. The stories of innovation provide a fresh set of details in an entertaining fashion on subjects that many, including me, have heard though only the “bumper-sticker” version of. Ridley’s views on what helps and what hurts innovation may be debatable, but his points are presented in a such a lively and humorous fashion, that even the most casual or skeptical reader/listener should enjoy this book.

As entertaining as it is, this book is more important for its message about the importance of the scientific method as we consider public and private health decisions.

should be required reading for medical professionals, health public policy experts, parents, educators, everyone! A fact-based case for the importance of sleep in everything that matters. I find it most amazing, that so little of the well-reasoned ideas in this book have been utilized.

Riveting and dramatic while enlightening. Before listening to this, thought I understood a lot about the Cuban Missle Crisis. but I was wrong. This book proves that it often takes a long time to both get the facts right, as materials become declassified for example, and understand fully the consequences. The performance was also exceptional. I'd like to give it 6 stars to truly distinguish it from other excellent books.

Bryson being Bryson

I have read and liked a few Bryson books. He is something of an acquired taste. Moreover, I think I might prefer his books with someone else reading them. In any case, if you like interesting stories built around a theme mixed with lots of fascinating trivia, this is the book for you. I plan to listen to it again, as some of the stories are so good I don't want to forget them.

Non-fiction that reads like a good novel

Total
5 out of 5 stars

The story itself is an amazing one. So incredible, it would be tough to swallow as fiction. It is all the more interesting because of the way Hillenbrand brings it alive. Facts are woven into the narrative in a way that enhances the story without becoming tiring. I love pure history, but this really is a great narrative with good history thrown in. It is also such an uplifting tale about how to overcome adversity, I am trying to get my kids to read it.
