Twisted metaphors funny and how.
Revisado: 06-16-18
Impressive and clever writing marks this as an enjoyable book about a young girl and her scewed outlook on her life. An aspiring gumshoe living in the late 1950's, she uses her wild imagination to get her through each day while caring for her younger sister. This is all in the wake of her young father dying and her mother's distractions. Her wildly enterprising ways of coping with their lives will keep you guessing all the way through to the end.

Learning How to Be
Revisado: 11-01-17
After losing everything, what is next? This is an amazing and we'll written story of a family who has lost more than everything they owned, and the unexpected path they find themselves on toward something very different. I highly recommend this wonderful book, as an experience you won't soon forget.

Historia
Lyra is rushing to the cold, far North, where witch clans and armored bears rule. North, where the Gobblers take the children they steal—including her friend Roger. North, where her fearsome uncle Asriel is trying to build a bridge to a parallel world. Can one small girl make a difference in such great and terrible endeavors? This is Lyra: a savage, a schemer, a liar, and as fierce and true a champion as Roger or Asriel could want. But what Lyra doesn't know is that to help one of them will be to betray the other.

This is an excellent book to listen to. The diverse cast adds a lot of dimension to the listening experience. The plot keeps the listener interested and anticipating the next step in the story. There is lots of excitement and some fun too. I would highly recommend it. 😀

Historia
Ben Macintyre’s Agent Zigzag was hailed as “rollicking, spellbinding” (New York Times), “wildly improbable but entirely true” (Entertainment Weekly), and, quite simply, “the best book ever written” (Boston Globe). In his new book, Operation Mincemeat, he tells an extraordinary story that will delight his legions of fans. In 1943, from a windowless basement office in London, two brilliant intelligence officers conceived a plan that was both simple and complicated - Operation Mincemeat.

A Secret Turning Point
Revisado: 02-21-17
A story filled with what must be almost all the minute details of what finally turned the tide for the Allies in World War II. Most of the time, the story urged me to come back to listening. At times though, the voice droned on with unending facts of this or that. I like to listen to books again, if they are good. So I expect to do the same with this one too. The drama of the story iis compelling enough to keep the reader's interest, most of the time. Beyond the story, it is interesting to see how important and pivotal this action was to the outcome of the war, and that it put another nail in Hitler's coffin and sealing his fate.

Historia
For 30 years, Howard and Deborah Morgan have poured all their energy and modest savings into Stoneyridge, a smallholding deep in the English moors. Howard putters with pottery, Deborah dabbles in weaving, and both struggle to tend sheep and chickens and live off the land. But what began with simple dreams of solitude and sunlit picnics in the hills has given way to a harsher reality. To help with finances, they decide to turn Stoneyridge into a bed-and-breakfast. But a sudden stroke leaves Howard incapacitated and Deborah overwhelmed.

disappointing
Revisado: 09-03-14
This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
This is simply the most disappointing story I have ever read in my seventy years of reading. There is little happiness, no generosity, while each character is so sadly selfish and self-centered in the way they live their lives. The only kindness is from a grumpy neighbor landlord. The main characters are undermined by a life of disappointment and miscommunication. Underlying all this is a pivotal lie than has ruined their lives and relationships with their failure to deal with it. I can not in my wildest recommend this. I am sorry I bought it.
What could Morag Joss have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
This story struggles to reveal anything but negativity, it is hard for me to see how it could be redeemed. I am a positive, optimistic person, who fervently believes in redemption in life. I see no glimmer of any of that in his plot. It exhibits fear not love, and an attitude of getting through life, not enjoying it.
What three words best describe Rosalyn Landor’s performance?
It was an adequate performance, but with such a book to read, I can't imagine her ability being able to help it.
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Our Picnics in the Sun?
This book is so negative, I am at a loss. There are many places where the characters could have reacted differently, more positively. But I sense that the author meant to show what such a life leads to.
Any additional comments?
I have never read such a book without some redemptive quality. Every time there was the opportunity for turning things around, it didn't happen and I was disappointed and ultimately let down by the portrayal of these lives.

AWKWARD
Revisado: 11-27-13
What did you like best about Two Guys Detective Agency? What did you like least?
I liked the story overall, and the humor is good too. BUT - the story was handled quite awkwardly, especially at the end. It was like someone told her she had to stop writing, so she clumsily did just that. I was drawn in by the characters though. The writer does have talent and I look forward to her future work, as she refines her writing skills. I am just getting to know this writer, so I hope she is not doing this just to crank out quantity rather than quality.
Would you ever listen to anything by Stephanie Bond again?
yes
Have you listened to any of Nan McNamara’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
don't remember
If this book were a movie would you go see it?
not at the price of current movies - I would watch it on tv
