Historia
Prodigal Summer weaves together three stories of human love within a larger tapestry of lives in southern Appalachia. At the heart of these intertwined narratives is a den of coyotes that have recently migrated into the region. Deanna Wolfe, a reclusive wildlife biologist, watches them from an isolated mountain cabin where she is caught off-guard by Eddie Bondo, a young hunter who comes to invade her most private spaces and her solitary life.

Historia
An unnamed paralegal, brought back to life through a controversial process, maneuvers through a near-future world that both needs and resents him. As the United States president spouts anti-reanimation rhetoric and giant pharmaceutical companies rake in profits, the man falls in love with lawyer Faustina Godínez. His world expands as he meets her network of family and friends, setting him on a course to discover his first-life history, which the reanimation process erased.

Story and ideas were great
Revisado: 04-03-25
Parallels to current country’s prejudices and admin’s heartlessness were spot on. Loved the Spanish whenever it creeped in (helps that I comprehend/speak it). The dialogue was a little wooden/mechanical—was the author having the man speak that way to hint at him not having a personality and not much emotion? If so, it worked, but I found the lack of enthusiasm and emotion of the man a little sad. The narrator echoed the unemotional nature of the man. So if that was author’s intent then spot on. I think that’s the only thing I didn’t like about the book—the dialogue was sort of wooden or mechanical. But the story was wonderful and a great interpretation of the classic.

Historia
After Tova Sullivan’s husband died, she began working the night shift at the Sowell Bay Aquarium, mopping floors and tidying up. Keeping busy has always helped her cope, which she’s been doing since her eighteen-year-old son, Erik, mysteriously vanished on a boat in Puget Sound over thirty years ago. Tova becomes acquainted with curmudgeonly Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium. Marcellus knows more than anyone can imagine but wouldn’t dream of lifting one of his eight arms for his human captors—until he forms a remarkable friendship with Tova.

Great story/author
Revisado: 03-29-25
Narrators and story were fantastic. I didn’t love Marcellus’ voice—the way the actor voiced him—sounding kind of snobbish or haughty—but I got used to it.

Historia
Hillbilly Elegy is a passionate and personal analysis of a culture in crisis - that of white working-class Americans. The decline of this group, a demographic of our country that has been slowly disintegrating over 40 years, has been reported on with growing frequency and alarm but has never before been written about as searingly from the inside. J. D. Vance tells the true story of what a social, regional, and class decline feels like when you were born with it hung around your neck.

Makes generalizations based on his personal experience
Revisado: 08-26-24
Disliked how he makes generalizations and judgements about a whole population/class of people based on his own personal experience. This is not an objective point of view. The “bootstrap” method works for some who have financial help and can catch a break (like he did). He’s never been a single mother, so he has no idea what that is like, and he has no right to judge those women in that situation, and then claim his views as facts. Just because he grew up poor does not mean he understands what others’ experiences were like who grew up in poverty. Sorry I spent the $ on this to support his viewpoints.

In the first book of this brilliant series, Stephen King introduces listeners to one of his most powerful creations: Roland of Gilead, The Last Gunslinger. He is a haunting figure, a loner on a spellbinding journey into good and evil. In his desolate world, which frighteningly mirrors our own, Roland tracks The Man in Black, encounters an enticing woman named Alice, and begins a friendship with the boy from New York named Jake.
