Well written, witty, and what a smart ass. I loved it. Mr. Spellvin also did a wonderful job in his narration.

Historia
On Winston Churchill’s first day as prime minister, Adolf Hitler invaded Holland and Belgium. Poland and Czechoslovakia had already fallen, and the Dunkirk evacuation was just two weeks away. For the next 12 months, Hitler would wage a relentless bombing campaign, killing 45,000 Britons. It was up to Churchill to hold his country together and persuade President Franklin Roosevelt that Britain was a worthy ally - and willing to fight to the end. In The Splendid and the Vile, Erik Larson shows how Churchill taught the British people "the art of being fearless."

Seems like Cliff Notes Version
Revisado: 07-18-21
This is a good story and John Lee is excellent as always, but there are too many short chapters that eliminate any sort of flow. This is my first Erik Larson work so I am not sure if utilizing many short chapters is just his unique writing style. However, to me, the constant interruption of announcing a new chapter seemingly every 10 minutess an annoyance.

Historia
Guy Montag is a fireman. In his world, where television rules and literature is on the brink of extinction, firemen start fires rather than put them out. His job is to destroy the most illegal of commodities, the printed book, along with the houses in which they are hidden. Montag never questions the destruction and ruin his actions produce, returning each day to his bland life and wife, Mildred, who spends all day with her television "family."

Found it hard to stop listening.
Revisado: 07-31-19
I doubt that I got much work done in the time it took me to listen to this classic novel. I was never a fan of Tim Robbins acting abilities, but absolutely loved his performance in reading this book. Mr. Robbins brought the characters to life. His skills were put to good use as the perfect amount of emotion was read into the story. His timing was also excellent.
This was a compelling story. It was eerily uncanny how the underlying issues in Bradbury's 1953 book so readily mirrored the issues of today (non-stop connectivity, hypersensitivity to take offense, short attention spans, violence, entitlement, etc.)
All-in-all, a very good book.

Excellent - A very touching story
Revisado: 05-14-19
I highly recommend this book. The stories told are engrossing and the narrator keeps the listener in the middle of the action. Also, the well researched personal accounts make this historical narrative even better than just a retelling of the events. The author goes full circle in completing the characters tales through his excellent and compelling description of their reunion some 65+ years later. A very heart warming account.

Historia
Bronx-born top turret-gunner Arthur Meyerowitz was on his second mission when he was shot down in 1943. He was one of only two men on the B-24 Liberator known as Harmful Lil Armful who escaped death or immediate capture on the ground. After fleeing the wreck, Arthur knocked on the door of an isolated farmhouse, whose owners hastily took him in. Fortunately, his hosts not only despised the Nazis but had a tight connection to the French resistance group Morhange and its founder, Marcel Taillandier.

So Tedious
Revisado: 07-15-18
What a chore to finish. Condescending, pretentious, and patronizing. Made me happy to have stopped following major league baseball; and watch it even less than the few times a year that I do now. Seemed like the narrator himself was also numbed by the text.

Williams was the best hitter in baseball history. His batting average of .406 in 1941 has not been topped since, and no player who has hit more than 500 home runs has a higher career batting average. Those totals would have been even higher if Williams had not left baseball for nearly five years in the prime of his career to serve as a Marine pilot in WWII and Korea.

Well written account of a very profane man
Revisado: 06-20-18
Williams is such a disgusting person, that I put this book down twice only to pick it up again and again several months later. This is a well written book and the narration was good. However, the subject of the book is an absolute pig. Bradlee showed Williams to be a great ball player but also as a wayward husband, a thin skinned malcontent, a vulgar person, a me- first player in a team game, and a disrespectful diva. Williams is noted to have been kind hearted to children and one who frequently helped others, it's hard to imagine how he functioned outside a locker room. All in all, he seemed like a one dimensional jerk.

Jimmy O. Yang is a stand-up comedian, film and TV actor and fan favorite as the character Jian Yang from the popular HBO series Silicon Valley. In How to American, he shares his story of growing up as a Chinese immigrant who pursued a Hollywood career against the wishes of his parents: Yang arrived in Los Angeles from Hong Kong at age 13, learned English by watching BET's Rap City for three hours a day, and worked as a strip club DJ while pursuing his comedy career.

Underdog Story
Revisado: 03-25-18
This was a great story and I appreciate Mr. O. Yang's determination and hard work but I was a little put- off and disappointed that the American dream is nothing more than strip clubs, partying, and bikini clad women. The underlying theme of the book is that the American dream means different things to different people but ultimately the opportunities to follow one's dreams is quintessentially American. An entertaining book.
