Historia
The Great Recession has shuffled Clay Jannon out of his life as a San Francisco Web-design drone - and serendipity, sheer curiosity, and the ability to climb a ladder like a monkey has landed him a new gig working the night shift at Mr. Penumbra’s 24-Hour Bookstore. But after just a few days on the job, Clay begins to realize that this store is even more curious than the name suggests. There are only a few customers, but they come in repeatedly and never seem to actually buy anything....

A Tale of Ancient Text and Modern Technology
Revisado: 03-07-13
I'm not sure what I enjoyed more....the wonderful character voices of Ari Fliakos or the intrigue of the story. A strange book store hidden away in San Francisco contains secrets and mysteries known to only a few. A chance part-time job leads the main character to question the real purpose of the strange store and armed with his high-tech knowledge and quirky friends, he begins a journey full of puzzles and codes and invention. A little philosophy, some history of the printed word and a dose of the newest and most spectacular computer technology kept my interest all the way to the end. Ari Fliakos is a wizard at creating voice and character - you can easily imagine them all. A fun read!

A History and Fine Arts Course in a Book
Revisado: 02-08-13
Like all McCullough's books, reading The Greater Journey is an educational experience couched in excellent historical non-fiction writing. It would probably be very surprising to many people to learn how much the French contributed to literature, science, the arts and architecture in the 19th and early 20th century. I have not visited Paris but I will have no problem navigating when I do next year. McCullough makes the city alive in my mind and I will be able to picture all of our country's early artists and writers sitting on their stools in the Louvre or on the benches of the parks or in the small studios tucked away on the Left Bank.
The fact that this book is so long made me happy - I did not want it to end!

Historia
Meet Harold Fry, recently retired. He lives in a small English village with his wife, Maureen, who seems irritated by almost everything he does, even down to how he butters his toast. Little differentiates one day from the next. Then one morning the mail arrives, and within the stack of quotidian minutiae is a letter addressed to Harold in a shaky scrawl from a woman he hasn’t seen or heard from in twenty years. Queenie Hennessy is in hospice and is writing to say goodbye.

A Must-Read for the 60+ Crowd
Revisado: 02-08-13
What did you love best about The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry?
I listen to Audible books on an IPOD while walking once a day for about an hour. I know it's a good book when I get back to the house and keep my earbuds in while drinking water, removing my shoes, etc. The plot of this book just kept drawing me forward - it is sweetly suspenseful.
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry?
The moment Harold makes the momentous decision to walk to Queenie.
What does Jim Broadbent bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
Since the setting is England, Jim's delightful accent adds to the pulse of the story.
Any additional comments?
This is a lovely story of friendship, healing and determination. In his sixties, Harold makes one impulsive (and not particularly bright) decision that changes his life. In the course of his journey, the author has woven sub-plots of a long-ago failed relationship with his son, the ensuing 40 year misunderstanding between he and his wife, and Harold's disappointment with his failure to live a more meaningful life. There are lessons here for all aging adults. As is often the case, I will purchase the hard copy to annotate.
