Historia
For decades the FBI let James ''Whitey'' Bulger get away with murder, allowing him continued control of his criminal enterprise in exchange for information. He went on the lam in 1995, after the terrorist attacks of 9/11, 2011 followed top-ranked Osama bin Laden on the FBI'''s Ten Most Wanted List, and then was captured in Santa Monica, California weeks after Bin Laden's demise.

Dark, brutally honest, thought provoking
Revisado: 08-05-24
I have read many true crime autobiographies and at first thought this might be another one of the same old stories by a mobster who snitched and then cashed in on his former life. What makes this one different is how self critical the author is about how much of dirt bag he really was. This book does not romanticize criminal life at all.
Moreover I’ve read a few books about Whitey Bulger and this one definitely adds more important, personal context. That guy was truly evil.
If you read this book, look up what the authors been up to since it was published. It really makes you wonder how sincere he was about reforming.

Historia
The anti-busing riots of 1974 forever changed Southie, Boston's working-class Irish community, branding it as a violent, racist enclave. Michael Patrick MacDonald grew up in Southie's Old Colony housing project. He describes the way this world within a world felt to the troubled yet keenly gifted observer he was even as a child. But the threats - poverty, drugs, a shadowy gangster world - were real. All Souls is heartbreaking testimony to lives lost too early, and the story of how a place so filled with pain could still be "the best place in the world".

One of the best audiobook narrators I’ve heard. Really makes the book interesting and exciting. Plus the book not only tells a great story but gives extra details about historical and social contexts that tie everything together.

Historia
George Anastasia exposes what it really means to be married to the mob—and fathered by it. As revealed in their personal accounts, life for the wife and sons of Thomas "Tommy Del" DelGiorno became a descent into hell. In the end, guilty of a raft of crimes that included multiple murders, Tommy Del served less than a year in prison in exchange for turning government witness during a dozen trials against fellow mobsters. Based on years of reporting, thousands of pages of court testimony, and extensive interviews, Mobfather takes the listener deep into the heart of corruption.

Great story

Really interesting hearing about mob life from the perspective of a wife and son. If you’re already familiar with Philly mob history this book gives a different context.
Agree with what another reviewer said about the narrator’s accent- sounds like it might be Baltimore? A little quirky but doesn’t make the book less enjoyable.

Frank DiMatteo was born into a family of mob hit men. His father and godfather were shooters and bodyguards for infamous Mafia legends, the Gallo brothers. His uncle was a capo in the Genovese crime family and bodyguard to Frank Costello. Needless to say, DiMatteo saw and heard things that a boy shouldn't see or hear. He knew everybody in the neighborhood. And they knew him...and his family. And does he have some wild stories to tell....

Great perspective, lacking narrative
Revisado: 07-01-23
This was an informative and entertaining firsthand account of crime history. But a lot of the chapters are written as long lists of people or places. Some of the stories seem to jump around a lot. I think the book could have benefited from following a sequential narrative.

We get it, you’re the toughest, your club is the best, blah blah blah
Revisado: 03-31-23
The book doesn’t feel very honest and introspective at all. There’s some entertaining anecdotes. I really enjoyed hearing about growing up in Oakland during the author’s early days. There’s some interesting insight about the club. But other than that it’s basically the author going on and on about how great he is. Almost no vulnerability shown as an author or a man. That gets boring and actually annoying.
