Historia
Piranesi lives in the House. Perhaps he always has. In his notebooks, day after day, he makes a clear and careful record of its wonders: the labyrinth of halls, the thousands upon thousands of statues, the tides that thunder up staircases, the clouds that move in slow procession through the upper halls. On Tuesdays and Fridays Piranesi sees his friend, the Other. At other times he brings tributes of food to the Dead. But mostly, he is alone.

Mysterious and beautiful
Revisado: 04-01-25
I’m convinced that if Susanna Clarke wrote a reimagining of a phone book, I would be enchanted. This story was the equivalent of a baited hook from word one and kept me glued to my headphones! The narrator was fantastic, really the perfect fit. My only real complaint is that it wasn’t longer. I could have used a little longer in the house, its beauty immeasurable and its kindness infinite.

Heartbreaking, tense and brutally human
Revisado: 03-22-25
I’ve been waiting so long to read this through my library app, it’s a long wait for a reason. I finally had to buy it because I loved Tananarive Due’s The Good House and fell in love. This book is a monument to the terrible struggle for justice in Jim Crow south, family bonds and the lengths we will go to for freedom. Highly recommended.

Everything about this book and its narration are world class. The story hooked me from chapter one. The characters are rich and complicated and the story is masterfully woven in such a way that you feel involved and swept away. I can not wait to devour more of Due’s work!! I’m an instant fan.

Historia
The Oaks is an idyllic, up-market country club—but its ornately carved walls hide a horrific past. Sixty years ago the house was an asylum, home to crazed psychopaths. One night all of them disappeared, never to be seen again. Jack Reed, the owner of The Oaks, has no idea about the building's terrible history. It is only when Jack's son is dragged into the walls of the mansion that he realises what happened sixty years ago—and just where the inmates have been living all this time...

Maybe the best narrator I’ve heard
Revisado: 02-17-25
Ok before I review the book, I just have to state for the record that this narrator is 12/10. I was really impressed at the quality of the different voices he used for various characters, particularly the female characters.
The book was awesome, unexpected and included in my prime( though honestly I would not have been disappointed if I had used a credit). Fast paced, interesting story, not stock standard haunted house at all. A very pleasant surprise all the way around.

Haunted house horror works when there are rules
Revisado: 01-28-25
Light spoilers: The narrator was great but the story was not. I hate leaving bad reviews but in this economy…save your credit. It feels silly to complain about ” reality “ in a book about a haunted house but if the big bad has no limiting factors than it’s no longer a haunted house story is it, it’s a haunted everything story.

Historia
When struggling riverboat captain Abner Marsh receives an offer of partnership from a wealthy aristocrat, he suspects something’s amiss. But when he meets the hauntingly pale, steely-eyed Joshua York, he is certain. For York doesn’t care that the icy winter of 1857 has wiped out all but one of Marsh’s dilapidated fleet. Nor does he care that he won’t earn back his investment in a decade. York has his own reasons for wanting to traverse the powerful Mississippi. And they are to be none of Marsh’s concern - no matter how bizarre, arbitrary, or capricious his actions may prove.

You know those books that wrap you up so completely in their world and lore that you’re loath to finish them? Well listener be warned, you’ll want more when it’s done. The narration was incredible, the story compelling, the characters fleshed out. Trust me when I say that you just don’t know how much you need a story about vampires and steamboats.

I really enjoyed this book. The main characters were not always like-able but in a way that felt very relatable, like a younger sibling that you just want to shake by the shoulders. The story was was fast paced and kept me engaged for the duration.

Very glad I stuck with this gem
Revisado: 05-24-24
Best to start with the bad here: this almost became the first book I’ve ever returned. When I started this book the extra audio elements were unexpected, unwanted and dang near unacceptable. Think radio play with, thankfully, one narrator. Swelling music, back ground room sounds, horse hooves.
The good: The narrator is nimble and very talented, bringing so much personality to each character. I couldn’t knock his work hence giving the overall four stars rather than performance. The background noises became easier to deal with after the first few chapters and actually kind of grew on me.
The great: I love western horror and I absolutely recommend this book if you do as well. Heck even if you’re a fan of regular westerns, male friendships, civil war content, I would recommend. I found the characters to be complex and the perspective unique. Big big thumbs up to the author.
