Historia
Delaney Wells is an unlikely new hire at the Every. A former forest ranger and unwavering tech skeptic, she charms her way into an entry-level job with one goal in mind: to take down the company from within. With her compatriot, the not-at-all-ambitious Wes Makazian, they look for the Every's weaknesses, hoping to free humanity from all-encompassing surveillance and the emoji-driven infantilization of the species. But does anyone want what Delaney is fighting to save? Does humanity truly want to be free?

So many times while listening to this book I had the same two thoughts. First: This can't happen. Second: But this is already happening. Great listen!

It's funny how little we are willing to accept from the government in exchange for our tax dollars when so much more is possible. As long as people continue to be fooled, we will all suffer.

Raised outside of Boston, Ivy’s immigrant grandmother relies on Ivy’s mild appearance for cover as she teaches her granddaughter how to pilfer items from yard sales and second-hand shops. Thieving allows Ivy to accumulate the trappings of a suburban teen - and, most importantly, to attract the attention of Gideon Speyer, the golden boy of a wealthy political family. But when Ivy’s mother discovers her trespasses, punishment is swift and Ivy is sent to China, and her dream instantly evaporates.

Historia
Rarely does a work of history contain startling implications for the present, but in The People, No, Thomas Frank pulls off that explosive effect by showing us that everything we think we know about populism is wrong. Today "populism" is seen as a frightening thing, a term pundits use to describe the racist philosophy of Donald Trump and European extremists. But this is a mistake. The real story of populism is an account of enlightenment and liberation; it is the story of American democracy itself, of its ever-widening promise of a decent life for all.

Historia
Experience a bold take on this classic autobiography as it’s performed by Oscar-nominated Laurence Fishburne. In this searing classic autobiography, originally published in 1965, Malcolm X, the Muslim leader, firebrand, and Black empowerment activist, tells the extraordinary story of his life and the growth of the Human Rights movement. His fascinating perspective on the lies and limitations of the American dream and the inherent racism in a society that denies its non-White citizens the opportunity to dream, gives extraordinary insight into the most urgent issues of our own time.

Worth Reading
Revisado: 10-12-20
The book tells an interesting story. It's worth reading. Unfortunately it is a bit racist the way it refers to all white men as the devil (and is especially tough on Jewish people). However, by the end of the book, Malcolm X renounces his belief that all white people are bad and that integration is impossible. Martin Luther King was the carrot and Malcolm X was the stick. Without agreeing with each other they gave white America a choice to either improve or face rebellion. It's an important lesson that power never concedes anything without a demand.

Historia
Screw Everyone is comedian Ophira Eisenberg's wisecracking account of how she spent most of her life saying "yes" to everything - and everyone - and how that attitude ultimately helped her overcome her phobia of commitment. Skeptical about long-term relationships, Eisenberg approached dating as a sort of research experiment from early on: She spent her twenties traveling from futon to futon and gathering data, figuring that one day she'd put it all together somehow and build her own perfect Frankenmate.

Historia
Marissa Dahl, a shy but successful film editor, travels to a small island off the coast of Delaware to work with the legendary - and legendarily demanding - director Tony Rees on a feature film with a familiar logline: Some girl dies. It's not much to go on, but the specifics don't concern Marissa. Whatever the script is, her job is the same. She'll spend her days in the editing room, doing what she does best: Turning pictures into stories. But she soon discovers that on this set, nothing is as it's supposed to be - or as it seems.

Historia
When he was 14, Joshua Wong made history. He staged the first-ever student protest in Hong Kong to oppose National Education, a "reform" which would have stifled free speech - and won. Since then, Joshua has led the Umbrella Movement, founded a political party, and rallied the international community around the anti-extradition bill protests, which have seen two million people - more than a quarter of the population - take to Hong Kong's streets. His actions have sparked worldwide attention, earned him a Nobel Peace Prize nomination, and landed him in jail twice.

The Real Deal
Revisado: 02-25-20
Reading this book as an American made me feel like an underachiever. I grew up with so many freedoms that I take for granted. Meanwhile in Hong Kong, a 17 year old kid stands up to the Chinese government and ends up behind bars as a political prisoner, just because he wanted a little bit of freedom for his people.
I look around at my fellow Americans and wonder who among us would have the guts to do what this kid did. He helped start the colored umbrella movement in Hong Kong that has turned into a pro-democracy revolution. He credits his Christian faith for giving him the strength to do these things. What an inspiration he is. What an inspiration his fellows in Hong Kong are, fighting for just a taste of the freedom that we in the west take for granted.

Historia
In both Europe and North America, populist movements have shattered existing party systems and thrown governments into turmoil. The embattled establishment claims that these populist insurgencies seek to overthrow liberal democracy. The truth is no less alarming but is more complex: Western democracies are being torn apart by a new class war. In this controversial and groundbreaking new analysis, Michael Lind, one of America’s leading thinkers, debunks the idea that the insurgencies are primarily the result of bigotry and reveals the real battle lines.

Monopoly is good... brought to you by Google
Revisado: 01-29-20
I am giving 1 star to a book I otherwise completely agree with because of one fraudulent section. Somewhere in the middle of the book, the author makes two claims that are very strange and don't fit in with the rest of his arguments. First, he claims that monopoly doesn't hurt wages. Second he claims that automation doesn't hurt wages. He makes no real justifications of these two claims, just states them as obvious fact and moves on.
These two strange claims got me curious about who was funding the author. After a quick search it turns out the author's think tank is funded by Google (the ex-chair of the think tank and it's largest donor is Eric Schmidt, the CEO of Google). Even more interesting, a scholar from the author's think tank actually made the claim last year that Google itself was a monopoly. But after pressure from Google, the think tank fired that scholar and reversed it's position on Google being a monopoly.
Now that I am armed with this information, the author's claims that monopoly isn't bad and automation isn't bad make a lot more sense. The author makes a lot of great points in this book and I agree with 90% of what he has to say. But there is no excuse for this kind of intellectual dishonesty. If you take money from a monopoly company and fire any employees who point out what you are doing, then you lose your right to claim objectivity in your analysis.
Monopoly is bad. Automation killed more American jobs than off-shoring did. You would certainly make these points yourself if your hands weren't tied by your need for funding from Google.

Historia
Most of us have instinctive evidence the world is ending - balmy December days, face-to-face conversation replaced with heads-to-screens zomboidism, a world at constant war, a political system in disarray. We hear some myths and lies so frequently that they feel like truths: Civilization is humankind’s greatest accomplishment. Progress is undeniable. Count your blessings. You’re lucky to be alive here and now. Civilized to Death counters the idea that progress is inherently good, arguing that the "progress" defining our age is analogous to an advancing disease.

After reading over 2000 books in the last 5 years, it's rare for me to be "blown away" by anything new. This book is an exception. Read it immediately and have your eyes opened to the truth.
