Historia
In 1906 I was barely over 14 years old, and it was my wedding day. My older sister, Helen, came to my room, took me by the hand, and sat me down on the bed. She said, "You've always been a good girl, Maude, and done what I told you. Now you're going to be a married woman, and he will be the head of the house. When you go home tonight after your party, no matter what he wants to do to you, you have to let him do it. Do you understand?"

Historia
When Ann-Marie's parents decided to leave their Hutterite colony in Canada with their seven children in tow, it was a complete shock. Overnight, the family was thrust into a society they did not understand, and which knew little of their unique culture. The transition was overwhelming. Desperate to be accepted, ten-year-old Ann-Marie was forced to deny her heritage in order to fit in with her peers. I Am Hutterite chronicles Ann-Marie's quest to reinvent herself as she comes to terms with the painful circumstances that led her family to leave community life.

Real Life!
Revisado: 02-11-13
What made the experience of listening to I Am Hutterite the most enjoyable?
I loved listening to Mary-Ann tell her story in the language of the Hutterites and with the accent that has carried over from her heritage.
What was one of the most memorable moments of I Am Hutterite?
I was completely stunned to hear of the drastic upheaval experienced by the family when they left the Colony and its lifestyle. I never thought it could be such a drastic change, but it was a great time of change in the world in general. I grew up in the same time period as Mary-Ann did, my family was a lot like hers. I had a lot of difficulty fitting in, but I was already part of the outside world.
What does Mary-Ann Kirkby bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
I said before, I loved her enunciation and accent. If only reading, this part would be lost. It adds so much to the overall story. It expresses the love they had for one another, it also explained the confusion they were living through when they left the Colony. I especially appreciated that this was Mary-Ann's story, narrated by her!
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
I've visited Hutterite Colonies in the United States. There were many aspects of their life that I knew of, but the details added in this story cleared away questions I never knew I had. I wanted to cry when the book ended!
Any additional comments?
LOVED, Loved, loved this story and the author/narrator. I would gladly read more of Mary-Ann Kirkby's books, if she were to write again. Especially, if she were the narrator!!!

Historia
One of the most acclaimed novels in recent memory, Charles Frazier's Cold Mountain is a masterpiece that is at once an enthralling adventure, a stirring love story, and a luminous evocation of a vanished American in all its savagery, solitude, and splendor.

Historia
John Forbes Nash, Jr., a prodigy and legend by the age of 30, dazzled the mathematical world by solving a series of deep problems deemed "impossible" by other mathematicians. But at the height of his fame, Nash suffered a catastrophic mental breakdown and began a harrowing descent into insanity, resigning his post at MIT, slipping into a series of bizarre delusions, and eventually becoming a dreamy, ghostlike figure at Princeton, scrawling numerological messages on blackboards.

A Beautiful Listen
Revisado: 09-25-12
Would you listen to A Beautiful Mind again? Why?
I'd listen to this book again. I'm almost one third thru the story, so I can't give much away, but what I've heard so far has been very interesting
What did you like best about this story?
I like biographies, I enjoy happy endings. This is a roller coaster ride for Nash, so I'm also along for the ride!
Which scene was your favorite?
Like I said, I'm only finishing the 1st section of the book, it's all been building towards his decline.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?
You think you know the ending, but what a story!
Any additional comments?
I almost didn't finish this book. The introduction was overwhelming. I'd get interested, then it would drone on into mathematical information, but then, fortunately, it would get interesting again. I'm glad I persevered!!!
