The story is a well rendered account of the adventures the Spanish conquistadors in what is now Mexico. Honduras, and Guatemala. The only down side was the reading of this Spanish account by someone with a thick Australian accent. It’s almost unforgivable. I speak Spanish fluently and his pronunciation is so bad as to cause me to pause and rewind sections to make sense of what was said. The narrator makes no attempt to pronounce Spanish words and names with even the slightest Spanish accent or pronunciation. The story should have been narrated by someone like Antonio Banderas or Javier Bardem. Otherwise it was a great story and I consider it time well spent in listening.

Everything about the story was great. Classical Russian literature and well read. It was suggested to me through a psychological class.

The only thing I wasn’t crazy about was the actual recording. , But it seems like they switched styles of microphones throughout the recording. The recording quality becomes more compressed periodically and randomly and then jumps back to the other microphone. It’s moderately distracting but doesn’t otherwise damage the story.

Don’t read Don Quijote before reading this

I have no idea how the story ever became a classic. The story has so much potential. It just seems like the writer was rushing to get from scenario to scenario. I read Don Quijote not too long ago. It seemed kind of tedious to me because the story veered into side stories that stretch 50 pages at a time. After a while I forgot where Don Quijote was at in his own story. Cervantes had Don Quixote say something like “…and then I heard a shepherd, singing a sad song, and I wondered why he was singing such a sad song, so I went down to ask him..” I found myself saying “no no! Please don’t go down, and ask him!” Because you headed off onto a side story that seemed to never end. Jason and the Argonauts sets the crew up in a scenario with some fantastical struggles with Greek mythological creatures that ends in one paragraph. I found myself saying, “are you kidding me? That’s it?” I’m doing my best to not say that this is just garbage storytelling. Maybe Don Quijote ruined me for storytelling, but this story just wasn’t that good.

I agree with the translations assessment that using archaic words doesn’t lend “authenticity” to an ancient story. The translation was good. The reading was lackluster. Claire Danes’ reading voice is marginal at best. Her voice crackles as she speaks. She also has a slight lisp on her S. Clair Danes made her living being physically attractive. This is of no benefit in an audiobook. I will not voluntarily listen to another story read by her. Everything else about the book was great.
