Historia
Ever have one of those days where life just plain sucks? Welcome to my last three months - ever since I caught my can’t-be-soon-enough-ex-husband cheating with his paralegal. I’m 35 years old, and I’ve lost my NYC apartment, my job, my money, and frankly, my dignity. But the final heartache in the suck sandwich of my life? My great-aunt Maggie died. The only family member who’s ever gotten me. Even after death, though, she’s helping me get back up again. Too bad that bravado only lasts as long as it takes to drive into Huckleberry Hills. And see the house.

A Very Long Pity Party
Revisado: 07-03-24
There were about 3 hours of entertaining content in this story. The rest was primarily focused on the main female's idocy, repetitive insecurities and lack of gumption. As most romance novels are predictable (that's why most of us listen to them - the hope of good things to come and happy endings) this one was typical. The cheating husband theme was also very familiar for this genre. What became extremely redundant was the whining insecurity of the female lead. It seemed to take forever to get to the end of her unsuccessful pep talks to herself. Her anger and judgment of others based on her experience with a louse of a husband was nonsensical. Her ability to wallow in self pity was almost a reason to not finish. Also, it was really difficult to tell what was actual dialogue vs inner thoughts. There was also an abundant use of the "F" word, which I do find offensive and indidcative of poor writing skills. I did laugh a few times which warrants two stars, but this book definitely falls into the barely mediocre rating.

Just Okay
Revisado: 06-09-24
The premise of this story was somewhat interesting, albeit predictable, but it was very lengthy. It is a clean, almost sterile romance, even to the point of leaving the listener wanting just a little more heat. Much of the story was vignettes describing the main characters' past experiences. After the first few times it became repetitive and rather boring, especially those regarding Lane's mean girl experiences.
The characterization in the story was often implausible. The reactions of the characters to various situations were not always consistent nor what would be normal. This made it hard to become interested in the characters and the elongated storyline. Lane, the female lead, was a supposedly strong business woman, yet her emotional and social instability made it a bit far-fetched. As a listener, I became really tired of her woe is me insecurities. Perhaps the author should have pushed it toward "Just Get Over It" instead of "Just Look Up." Also, a family that welcomes back the prodigal daughter, who is a professionally renowned business woman, would certainly not ask her to milk the cows. The matriarch's character, Dotty, was completely unfathomable. She was painted as loving so deeply one minute and then on the next page didn't hesitate to publicly humiliate Lane. The vocals for that character didn't help either. She often sounded like she was a mean drunk and that certainly didn't fit the abundant and awkward references to religion and prayer. The younger sister in the story was yet another characterization flaw in this book. The whole relationship between the sisters was a stretch, let alone throwing in Jasper. The sister Lindsay's character is that of a whining, petulant teen, even though she is an adult and a mother. The narrator's vocals for her are grating and contribute to the unbelievability of the character. The author paints Jasper, the love interest of the two sisters, as a two-timing louse and self-absorbed a-hole. Yet, Lane encourages Lindsay to stay with him. Just writing this, I'm wondering how I made it through the frequent idiocy of this book.
Another issue that almost caused a "did not finish" situation was the use of the word "fine". The author's over use of that word made the story almost cringe-worthy, I could feel it coming and yep, there is was, again and again. The references to weight were also overused. I would think an experienced and well-versed author, as well as an editor or even proofreader, would note the redundancies. I do have access to the other books just becuase they were free. I don't think I am interested enough to purchase one. I may listen to another, after a break, but if it is more of the same, I'm done with this author.

Engaging Story and Series
Revisado: 06-05-24
I enjoyed this series and the rags to riches theme. Lorraine Heath has created characters in such a way that the reader becomes quickly invested. Gillie, the main female character was determined, resiliant, kind-hearted, and very likeable. It is a nice change from the insipid female lead characters. The storyline maintains the reader's interest throughout the book and offers a relevant message.

Barbie Incarnate
Revisado: 06-05-24
The premise of the story had promise. It was the execution in every meaning of the word that was supremely flawed. The dialogue and plot were that of an R-rated Barbie cartoon. The whole thing was completely idiotic. Top that off with a horrible narrator and it was a total fail. I had to skip through and finally I just went to the epilogue. I don’t think I missed a thing, as that picked right up again with the same stupidity. This was the first and will definitely be the last time I read anything by this author.

Finishing was a challenge...
Revisado: 05-02-24
I felt a bit cheated with this one, as the first half of the book was a retelling of the first book in this series, A Noble Masquerade. It simply changes the perspective. However, one thing it does not do is make Georgina any more likeable. For most of the book she is greedy, manipulative and entitled. Then suddenly she has a spiritual epiphany and all is right with the world. This really is a Christian novel with some fairly heavy preachiness. The romance is almost nonexistent, very clean and completely uninteresting. I've now painfully listened to the first two books in this series, and although I am somewhat interested in the brothers, I doubt I will ever get desperate enough for reading material to sit through the lengthy boring hours produced by this author. These books are very superficial in plot and character development, but somehow prattle on repetitively.
To top off the unpleasant experience, the reader of the audio book was very stilted in rendition of the material. Unfortunately, It was a different narrator than the first book. Not that it would have improved the storyline, but at least listening wouldn't have been so painful. The narrator over-enunciated the words, completely destroying any sort of flow in this pedantic story. Some of her male voices were incredibly gravelly and harsh sounding, In truth, the performance was awful.

Lady Miranda Hawthorne acts every inch the lady, but inside she longs to be bold and carefree. Entering her fourth Season and approaching spinsterhood in the eyes of society, she pours her innermost feelings out not in a diary but in letters to her brother's old school friend, a duke - with no intention of ever sending these private thoughts to a man she's heard stories about but never met.

Undecided
Revisado: 05-02-24
This was the first book I have read by this author. It is a very clean romance with awkward, random religious references which grow in frequency as the book progresses. The relationship between the main characters was contrived and made the story even more difficult to relate to. Although the storyline was of interest, the writing was somewhat boring and repetitive. The last half was particularly slow. There was a little humor which helped to hold interest. Although this book was not really to my liking, I may try another because I am somewhat interested in the other siblings.
The reader did a good job with the material she had.

Awkward in Every Way
Revisado: 02-25-24
This book is cringe worthy in every way. The character development is minimal and inconsistent. The writing is stilted and unimpressive. The storyline is predictable and rather idiotic at times. It was bad to begin with and progressively somehow managed to get worse. The failed attempts at suspense were ridiculous. The barren beginning and then the repeated awkward sex scenes at the end. UGH! The dialogue is completely ridiculous. The narrator is laughably awful. The repeated and emphasized “ye” and “no”. Good grief, is this guy a novice? The attempted Scottish brogue is horrible. This will definitely be my first and last reading of anything by this author.

Morbid Tale
Revisado: 01-30-24
This was a morbid and idiotic tale with possibly the most stupid female character I have encountered. It was completely predictable and I lost brain cells by sticking with it to the end. Listener beware. There are plenty of other worthy stories deserving of your attention. Give this one a firm pass.

Okay, I guess…
Revisado: 01-03-24
Although somewhat predictable, the premise of the story was interesting, for lack of a better word. If you like to read about overwhelming revenge and greed, this book would be to your liking. At times it was a bit redundant in characters, action, and dialogue. Most of the characters were incredibly weak-willed and unlikeable. It became a bit tedious and I found my mind wandering, but able to tune back in and still follow the storyline. The narration was okay. However, sometimes, particularly in dialogue, it was hard to distinguish between characters. The quality of the recording was quite poor. Throughout the entire audio book, there was a white noise in the background. I didn’t absolutely hate the book, but I was glad when it finally ended.
