Good book, but not always enjoyable...
Revisado: 01-26-25
I wasn't sure what to expect with this book. Typically Mass effect novels are well written entertaining affairs that are character studies punctuated by high adventure. That said of all the Mass effect books that I've read(6)this one was the most difficult to get through. The book isn't difficult to read because it's bad, totally the opposite its actually quite well written and even a thoughtful meditation on how mutinies occur. If you spent any amount of time with that subject matter you know that largely historic mutinies are often a well meaning series of errors rather than stories that have marked heroes or villains. If you're the kind of person who doesn't necessarily enjoy analysis of a tragic accident you might not enjoy reading this. no character in this book is carrying the moral high ground. All of the characters generally speaking are doing their best to make the most out of a bad situation and their best is not good enough, that can make for a difficult read. The book doesn't really contain protagonists and antagonists strictly speaking. it is a hard look at human nature and how things like this happen, it is also worth noting this is not the piece of high adventure that you might expect after reading the early Mass Effect novels.

Toys and games have long been a part of childhood, but the 20th century saw the rise of an entire industry devoted to the business of play, one that would constantly evolve over the years. In the six lectures of The History of Toys, 1900 to the Present, consultant and toy industry expert Chris Byrne—also known as The Toy Guy®—will take you on a journey through the world of toys from the Edwardian era to our current moment. Beginning with the birth of the mass-market toy industry, you’ll trace the many transformations of toys and our shifting theories of play and childhood development.

If you are a person who has any interest in this subject matter I couldn't recommend it more. As a professor myself who enjoys a good lecture I am happy to report this is a great lecture. well researched, succinct and even a little moving at times. Honestly my only complaint is that it was a little too short.

Letty Begins
Revisado: 04-28-24
Great all around Prey book. While not the first appearance of Lettty Davenport that distinction belongs to Naked Prey. Gathering Prey starts Letty's adult years and begins the narrative path for The Investigator. Without too many spoilers this novel is one of a handful in the series that also marks a major change in Lucas's life as well.

Good for fans, not the best place for series entry
Revisado: 10-15-23
Considering where Righteous Prey left the guys It was good to see them back on their feet. As Prey books go this novel had the difficult job of following Righteous Prey which is one of the best. like Easy Prey for good or bad this book relies on the fact that you already know and care about it's cast. Different because most prey books feel like an easy series entry point. About the narrator i'd be lying if I said Ferrone was not missed a little here after being the voice of these characters for 30 sum books . That said I'm ready to give the new guy a chance Petkoff does good work and as with Dark Angel delivered a solid performance. I do wonder why they didn't use Conger from the Flowers novels whose work I also enjoy.

best case read after season 1 before S2.
Revisado: 07-02-21
A pretty interesting read for the purposes of getting more in-depth background on the characters and the events that led up to the series. That being said it's not precisely a page turner so to speak because you sort of know how it's going to turn out. The best scenario for this book would be you watch season 1 read this book watch season 2, ideally that would probably give this book considerably more punch, it would also add some fun rewarding moments to season 2 as you watched. Obviously, that would be a rare scenario but if you have the choice that's what I'd recommend. likewise, I would recommend for devoted fans.
