Cool concept, bad execution

I like the concept but the character development leaves something to be desired. A few characters have full development but then every character gets a funeral and for some like Craig you are supposed to have a 1d view of him for the entire book until you get to his funeral and then his entire personality changes. Good concept though.

Abused by a loved and trusted older brother, Westover struggles for years to escape the cycles of abuse and finally finds her escape through her education. It's a story of struggles and triumphs and the conflict in the mind of a woman torn between family loyalty and her survival instincts.

This book was enlightening about family social dynamics which are amplified in this book because the family, which is the subject of the book, is not mainstream- the story-line was such a confusing mix of love, commitment, fear, abuse, cover up and moving on.
