Historia
The Jazz Age is in full swing, but Casiopea Tun is too busy cleaning the floors of her wealthy grandfather’s house to listen to any fast tunes. Nevertheless, she dreams of a life far from her dusty small town in southern Mexico. A life she can call her own. Yet this new life seems as distant as the stars, until the day she finds a curious wooden box in her grandfather’s room. She opens it - and accidentally frees the spirit of the Mayan god of death, who requests her help in recovering his throne from his treacherous brother.

Narrator was not a good fit
Revisado: 07-26-19
The narrator was not a good fit for this story. Not enough emotion or inflection. Also no difference between the characters voices. But the story was enjoyable.

Historia
In 2014, Theranos founder and CEO Elizabeth Holmes was widely seen as the next Steve Jobs: a brilliant Stanford dropout whose startup “unicorn” promised to revolutionize the medical industry with its breakthrough device, which performed the whole range of laboratory tests from a single drop of blood. Backed by investors such as Larry Ellison and Tim Draper, Theranos sold shares in a fundraising round that valued the company at more than $9 billion, putting Holmes’s worth at an estimated $4.5 billion.

Historia
The Butler family has had their share of trials - as sisters Althea, Viola, and Lillian can attest - but nothing prepared them for the literal trial that will upend their lives. Althea, the eldest sister and substitute matriarch, is a force to be reckoned with, and her younger sisters have alternately appreciated and chafed at her strong will. They are as stunned as the rest of the small community when she and her husband, Proctor, are arrested, and in a heartbeat, the family goes from one of the most respected in town to utter disgrace.

Not for me
Revisado: 03-21-19
Based on the reviews on different blogs and book sites I expected this one to blow me away. It didn't. I spent a lot of time trying to figure out why I was supposed to feel sympathy for Kim and not enough time knowing the sisters.
Also at some point it began to feel like the author was just throwing every type of trauma at the characters that she could just to see how many would fit.
I wanted to enjoy this one but it just wasn't a good fit for me.

Historia
It's the perfect idea for a romantic week together: traveling across America by train. But then Hugo's girlfriend dumps him. Her parting gift: the tickets for their long-planned last-hurrah-before-uni trip. Only, it's been booked under her name. Nontransferable, no exceptions. Mae is still reeling from being rejected from USC's film school. When she stumbles across Hugo's ad for a replacement Margaret Campbell (her full name!), she's certain it's exactly the adventure she needs to shake off her disappointment and jump-start her next film.

Sweet and hopeful.
Revisado: 03-11-19
I really enjoyed this book. It was sweet and hopeful and just a bit angsty which is exactly what I love. Hugo was great and relatable and I loved that Mae was a bit of a non romantic girl. It was very refreshing to read.

Ripped my heart out
Revisado: 12-05-18
I don't have the words to describe this book. Full of love and pain and loss, the main character Sadie is so so wonderfully real and this story ripped my heart out. This audiobook was so well done and I am so happy that I gave this story a try.
Do yourself a favor and listen to Sadie. ( And if there is a Sadie in your real life listen to her too).

For nearly a century, the Nomeolvides women have tended the grounds of La Pradera, the lush estate gardens that enchant guests from around the world. They’ve also hidden a tragic legacy: If they fall in love too deeply, their lovers vanish. But then, after generations of vanishings, a strange boy appears in the gardens. The boy is a mystery to Estrella, the Nomeolvides girl who finds him, and to her family, but he’s even more a mystery to himself; he knows nothing more about who he is or where he came from than his first name.

Beautiful and lush
Revisado: 11-16-18
This was such a lovely read and so visual! I could see the garden in my head it was described so vividly! The story is so timely and well told and I loved the LGBTQ representation as well as the immigrant story. This will sit with me for a long while.

Historia
Perfect Mexican daughters do not go away to college. And they do not move out of their parents' house after high school graduation. Perfect Mexican daughters never abandon their family. But Julia is not your perfect Mexican daughter. That was Olga's role. Then a tragic accident on the busiest street in Chicago leaves Olga dead and Julia left behind to reassemble the shattered pieces of her family. And no one seems to acknowledge that Julia is broken, too. Instead, her mother seems to channel her grief into pointing out every possible way Julia has failed.

So heartfelt and good
Revisado: 01-08-18
I really enjoyed this book. From the narrator to the actual story everything was really good. I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 mainly because I didn't enjoy the almost insta-love that takes place. I understood it's place in Julia's story but could have done without it.
This book really resonated with me, as a lot of the way Julia's Mexican mom acted mirrored some of the same things my puerto rican mom acted. I actually cried a bit near the end.
All in all this is a solid well told WOC coming of age story which I think we need more of.

Historia
Taliah Sahar Abdallat lives and breathes music. Songs have always helped Tal ease the pain of never having known her father. Her mother, born in Jordan and very secretive about her past, won't say a word about who her dad really was. But when Tal finds a shoebox full of old letters from Julian Oliver - yes, the indie rock star Julian Oliver - she begins to piece the story together. She writes to Julian, but after three years of radio silence, she's given up hope. Then, one day, completely out of the blue, Julian shows up at her doorstep.

Nothing really happened
Revisado: 01-04-18
I enjoyed the narrator and the basic idea of this story but there was no real substance to it. Which was disappointing because I adored Warga's first novel. This one needed about 100 more pages and a bit more meat in the middle to make it really work.
