Historia
Bea and Awilda have been best friends from the moment Awilda threw her 14-year-old self across Bea’s twin-sized bed as if they had known each other forever. Bubbly, adventurous Awilda taught sheltered, shy Bea how to dress, wear her hair, and what to do with boys. She even introduced Bea to her husband, Lonnie, in college, who pledged to take good care of her for the rest of their lives. But philanderer Lonnie breaks that promise over and over again, leaving Bea to wrestle with her self-esteem and longtime secret addiction.

Takes you on an emotional roller coaster
Revisado: 04-19-25
I liked this one the least out of Sedeqa’s books. I didn’t like the ending. All I can say, without giving the storyline away, is hopefully we women aren’t allowing this in our lives today.

Historia
Felicia Lyons, a stressed-out stay-at-home mom, struggles to sprint ahead of the demands of motherhood while her husband spends long days at the office. Felicia taps, utters mantras, and breathes her way through most situations, but on some days, like when the children won't stop screaming her name or arguing over toy trucks and pretzel sticks, she wonders what it would be like to get in her car and drive away.

Don’t know what to say…
Revisado: 03-19-25
I was disappointed with the selfishness, the deception, the naivety and finally the crazy renewal of the main character. Family means everything and this mother seemed happy being accepted in a high society club more than accepting her roots. While it kept my interest, as a black mother, I was disappointed with this story and hope it has no relation to the author’s life. All in all, it was ok.

Historia
Born on a plantation in Charles City, Virginia, Pheby Delores Brown has lived a relatively sheltered life. Shielded by her mother’s position as the estate’s medicine woman and cherished by the Master’s sister, she is set apart from the others on the plantation, belonging to neither world. She’d been promised freedom on her eighteenth birthday, but instead of the idyllic life she imagined with her true love, Essex Henry, Pheby is forced to leave the only home she has ever known. She unexpectedly finds herself thrust into the bowels of slavery at the infamous Devil’s Half Acre.

Sedeqa did it again. This was such a good book. It took me on an emotional journey. Oh my God! People today, count your blessings. I felt like I was there and could feel all that they endured. This would make a great movie. Can’t wait to read another Sedeqa Johnson book. 2 for 2 so far…

Historia
In present-day California, Eleanor Bennett’s death leaves behind a puzzling inheritance for her two children, Byron and Benny: a black cake, made from a family recipe with a long history, and a voice recording. In her message, Eleanor shares a tumultuous story about a headstrong young swimmer who escapes her island home under suspicion of murder. The heartbreaking tale Eleanor unfolds, the secrets she still holds back, and the mystery of a long-lost child challenge everything the siblings thought they knew about their lineage and themselves.

Nice story but too too much that doesn’t have to be there
Revisado: 02-11-25
I like the story but the author just gives too much of a background of characters where one can skip and still be current or caught up. She lingers and lingers where she doesn’t have to. Otherwise, it was a good story. I do recommend Black Cake!

Historia
Just when it appears that all her hard work on Barack Obama’s presidential campaign is about to pay off with a White House job, 35-year-old Ida B. Wells Dunbar finds herself on Washington, DC’s post-election sidelines even as her 20something counterparts overrun the West Wing. Adding to her woes, her father, the Reverend Horace A. Dunbar, Atlanta civil rights icon, is notoriously featured on an endlessly replayed YouTube clip in which his pronouncements don’t exactly jibe with the new era in American politics.

Just Ok but keeps your attention
Revisado: 11-19-24
Sometimes, I think the author rattled on a bit much in the chapters without getting to the point. I think she could have given us more of a climax with an unexpected ending. But all in all, it was ok.

This is a book that takes a long time to get to where it’s going but at the same time, keeps one interested in what’s going to happen next. But at the end, I wanted to know the fate of other characters mentioned. All in all, not bad.

Historia
When crime reporter Jordan Manning leaves her hometown in Texas to take a job at a television station in Chicago, she’s one step closer to her dream: a coveted anchor chair on a national network. Jordan is smart and aggressive, with unabashed star-power, and often the only woman of color in the newsroom. Her signature? Arriving first on the scene—in impractical designer stilettos. Armed with a master’s degree in forensic science and impeccable instincts, Jordan has been able to balance her dueling motivations: breaking every big story—and giving a voice to the voiceless.

Not enough beef...
Revisado: 07-08-24
The book is an easy listen, but the story doesn't contain enough beef...too murky. It's like Tamron hurried this book along. The story lingered a bit for no reason and then it jumps back on track. But all-in-all, it was ok.

It was a struggle at first...
Revisado: 07-08-24
When I first started listening to Bits and Pieces, it was a struggle because Whoopi was all over the place and there's some information left out that makes the reader wonder how the book got from here to there...leaving out a whole in-between. All-in-all, it's an OK listen. ~Kat
