It’s okay but not better than the first book

This is a typical second book where the author saw how successful the first book was and decided to slow things down. It’s not bad though but a lot of the story felt unnecessarily prolonged.

Spoilers

Also, how many times is Ray gonna end up in a hospital after overextending himself? Or how many times are the tests going to be tampered with? I’ll follow the story for now but the spark of the first book just isn’t there.

Overall, it’s a great story with good narration. The MC learns some good lessons that in hindsight, he needed to learn to move on.

***Spoilers***

I’m not a fan of “revenge”, “betrayal” and “imprisonment” stories but I think this was well done. I’d like to thank the author for wrapping up the “injured heart” story plot instead of milking it because I was getting frustrated. The end result was well done.

My advice to the author as a reader is this, you went all out on the “betrayal”, “imprisonment” and “framing” trope, it was well done but you can’t use it again. If in future books the MC is once again fooled, or imprisoned, then I’m out. Im saying this because a lot of time, I see authors use the same tropes over and over and it gets old fast. Use a trope once, maybe twice but move on. I wouldn’t lead you astray and good job overall.

In future books, let’s move on from revenge and into something a little more productive. It’s a great story though, just some observations and pitfalls to avoid.

Wraps up quite nicely, no reason not to pick it up if you haven't already done so.

I was a little nervous since authors always find ways to mess things up but the story is still good, like a warm cup of tea. I love the narrator’s voice, brings me a lot of joy.

I want to see more world building and more Lark being awesome at being a great king and wizard.

The fights are too long and dragged out, the treasures subpar, the gains meager and the ending is meh.

I don’t know, maybe I’m not enjoying the story anymore. Maybe that’s the end for me.

I will say that I almost quit after book 4 but decided to give book 5 a chance - it was ok. This one, book 6, I think is my favorite.

Some people complain about the “base building” being boring, I disagree. It’s part of a good LITRPG book where the character grows and eventually becomes a leader and must learn to lead/ build a city - I love that aspect of LITRPG - everyone and everything grows. It can’t be all action, no one can pay attention for that long.

This being said, a book LITRPG book needs to be well balanced and contain good leveling, strong characters, good villains, good politics and a good story ark about leading and nation/city building. I think previously the author leaned too much on action and I would just space out. I think this book comes closest to being a well balanced book but there is still room to grow and improve.

***mild spoilers***

First you make it seem like territorial authority is the best thing ever, then, you have a whole book with characters focusing on it. I knew the author was going to do something stupid. If Felix didn’t qualify for the authority, why did you make us think he could get it? I hate it when authors do that. All that work for nothing. Disappointed. No satisfaction.

Be upfront, you knew he couldn’t get it and you wrote a whole book making us think he could get it then, oh, you don’t qualify. Come on man?

What made me so mad is you named him as a qualified challenger and then for what, trick us readers. Whatever…

I’m not longer invested in Felix defending the city. I was hoping he’d be a leader and grow from there. If that’s not the direction you wanted to take the book, why create the opportunity? Just make it so you are up front, Felix Navarre doesn’t qualify for the authority. Period. I hate feeling duped. You didn’t do that because you wanted to create a reason for us to see Felix fight but with no reward. It’s a like book that has a heist and at the end, the characters get nothing because you wanna keep them poor and struggling, I hate these types for books.

Yet, somehow he stills gets quests from a system that doesn’t think he is qualified, it’s confusing and makes no sense. Oh, you don’t qualify for the authority but hey, you are an inheritor for some stupid temple key with secrets. But hey, you don’t qualify for a system wide quests you are invited to attend anyway. Come on? Lacy of cohesion, lack of direction.

Anyway, I was looking for a reason to stop, that’s it. Don’t toy with people. Such a waste of my time, sigh.

Half the time, I didn’t know who was fighting who.

Mild spoilers-

If the MC and his fox were supposed to share everything, why not talent? I find it odd that they share tribulations but not talent.

The first 2 books were free for me and I think it’s fine, just not enough for me to buy the rest of the series, especially if the author keeps on focusing on new characters that end up dying or just I’m not invested in. One of the reasons I like cultivation type books is because they usually focus on one person and their growth. I don’t know, this format just doesn’t work for me. Others may like it though.

Not traditional LITRPG or progression fantasy

It’s a story about characters, granted very annoying characters. But the thing is, the story goes no where and the author focuses on the mundane, even on the female menstrual cycle and all it’s details. Also I don’t relate with the obsession with chess.

Expectations? If you are a truth LITRPG fan or even a progression fantasy fan and you are expecting a story about a character that grows stronger over time while overcoming obstacles with lots of battles, it’s not it. It’s not even a story about nation building, which some LITRPG stories had and I was hoping for.

Some recommendations say to keep reading but I did keep reading and I had 3 hours left, I just couldn’t take it anymore. I think by around 25-50 percent of book, you would know if it’s your cup of tea or not.

Besides the mentioning of levels, I’m not even sure it’s true LITRPG. This being said, this is more of a traditional fantasy story and might appeal to someone outside of the LITRPG genre. It’s not bad, it’s just not for me or people that likes the traditional dungeon fighting hero.

The book is long but don’t expect much story. Just stupid characters making stupid decisions and internal emotional discussions.

The narrator is one of the best female narrators I’ve listened to though.

I’ve had my frustrations with this author but this is a book I think he got right. However, it’s not just enough to say I liked it, I want to say why:

Spoiler alert:

1) Great cultivation and progression - most important.

2) Small interesting stories that actually progressed the story and Wu Ying’s path, not just filler. Too many bad books try to turn one story ark that should have lasted a few chapters into a whole book while zero progression is made just so they can add one more book. This book here, I think is done just right. That is not to say that the author should shy away from big story arcs, no! As long as the big story arc is not filler and progresses the story and cultivation significantly.

3) Wu Ying actually makes good and sane decisions.

4) Love the dragons, too bad we didn’t see more of their world and who they are. For example, are they immortals or just nascent soul cultivators?

5) Love the news from home, would love to see Wu Ying go back more powerful than ever, maybe even as a nascent soul cultivator, that would teach them especially after they threw him out of the sect.

This being said, my question to the author is what about the immortals and the gods? He mentions them but we know nothing, which is fine at this point in the story.

I only mention it because maybe we shouldn’t have to wait until book 12 for Wu Yin to ascend. Why not give us a book or 2 on the heavens itself, or at some point, increase interaction with the immortals or the gods. Wu Yin has an immortal ancestor, does he not? Just a thought! Also, in his system apocalypse series, he touched on a lot of topics only not to follow through. I just want to nudge him to follow through on his ideas so we can have a well-rounded conclusion to the series.

Good job to the narrator as usual, I can tell he enjoyed reading that book.
