Terrific Storyline - Sometimes Too Technically Verbose
Revisado: 09-06-24
I wanted to really like this book - the concept and storyline was very different from most sci-fi books and I thought very interesting. Sometimes the book was confusing as there was a lot of flashbacks and forwards that I got lost a little. I love technical sci-fi books but this was one tended to lose my attention through the long sections of explaining the SOFANS. Seems like the book was written to have a sequel, so there would be closure, an ending; but, I guess not - would have liked that though.

Historia
The only life Tress has known on her island home in an emerald-green ocean has been a simple one, with the simple pleasures of collecting cups brought by sailors from faraway lands and listening to stories told by her friend Charlie. But when his father takes him on a voyage to find a bride and disaster strikes, Tress must stow away on a ship and seek the Sorceress of the deadly Midnight Sea. Amid the spore oceans where pirates abound, can Tress leave her simple life behind and make her own place sailing a sea where a single drop of water can mean instant death?

Interesting - Playful - Different.
Revisado: 07-26-24
Brandon Sanderson is one of my favorite authors. This book was interesting and filled with the usual Sanderson imagination of a dystopian world. However this book challenges my thinking of Branden as it seemed a somewhat different “lane” for him. I definitely was having Princess Bride thought as I continued to hear about Tress and her personality. I’m still trying to figure out how much I liked the book, different, but still typical Sanderson attention to detail. I liked it but not sure Tress 2 (similar genre) is in my future.

Historia
In this barren home, siblings Conner, Rob, Palmer and Violet daily carve out a future. They live in the shadow of their father and oldest sister, Vic, two of the greatest sand divers ever to comb the desert’s depths. But these branches of their family tree are long gone, disappeared into the wastes beyond, leaving the younger siblings scratching in the dust, hopeful for a better life. On the other side of No Man’s Land, Anya was born beside the abundant mines knowing her prospects would be to marry, have a family, and work in ore, in service to the Empire of the East.

Story Interesting But Slow Reading
Revisado: 04-29-22
I liked the general storyline but there was a section that took about 1/3 of the book (near the middle) that was incredibly slow and way too much effort devoted to that one event. The reading was just ok with some very slow dialog (drawls) that I got tired of easily. The ending of course set up the next book and came to a somewhat logical breakpoint for a trilogy.

Way Too Slow
Revisado: 04-02-22
Love OSC detail but this one went too far - detail and repetition that dragged on and on with a somewhat limited story line. Some concepts were interesting, just too much irrelevant information. Reading was ok but just barely - again too slow and mechanical.
