Historia
Peking in 1937 is a heady mix of privilege and scandal, opulence and opium dens, rumors and superstition. The Japanese are encircling the city, and the discovery of Pamela Werner's body sends a shiver through already nervous Peking. Is it the work of a madman? One of the ruthless Japanese soldiers now surrounding the city? With the suspect list growing and clues sparse, two detectives - one British and one Chinese - race against the clock to solve the crime before the Japanese invade and Peking as they know it is gone forever.

Historia
In September 1941, Adolf Hitler's Wehrmacht surrounded Leningrad in what was to become one of the longest and most destructive sieges in Western history - almost three years of bombardment and starvation that culminated in the harsh winter of 1943 - 1944. Trapped between the Nazi invading force and the Soviet government itself was composer Dmitri Shostakovich, who would write a symphony that roused, rallied, eulogized, and commemorated his fellow citizens - the Leningrad Symphony.

How literature and music made the siege of Leningrad a human experience
Revisado: 05-06-18
Many have heard the dire tale of the siege of Leningrad, but few know how the Russian people found solace in their literary heritage and resolve in the music of Shostakovich. Just as musicians aboard the Titanic chose to spend their final moments enveloped in song, so the people of Leningrad often died with Pushkin on their lips and the powerful rhythms of Shostakovich, Tchaikovsky and others echoing in their ears and flowing from their emaciated fingers. Inspiring.

Historia
Robert K. Massie returns with another masterpiece of narrative biography, the extraordinary story of an obscure German princess who became Catherine the Great. Born into a minor noble family, Catherine transformed herself into empress of Russia by sheer determination. For thirty-four years, the government, foreign policy, cultural development, and welfare of the Russian people were in her hands.

A fascinating and powerful woman
Revisado: 07-16-17
Anyone who doubts women's ability to rule and to roll well would do well to read this fascinating account of the most fascinating woman. Robert Massie's expert treatment of all things Russian shines in this thorough and beautiful portrait of both Catherine and Russia itself. Over and over again I found myself making connections between the swirl of political forces and influences at work in mid 19th century Russia and today. Read it and learn.

The Mongol army led by Genghis Khan subjugated more lands and people in 25 years than the Romans did in 400. In nearly every country the Mongols conquered, they brought an unprecedented rise in cultural communication, expanded trade, and a blossoming of civilization.

Historia
For more than four decades, Bernard-Henri Lévy has been a singular figure on the world stage - one of the great moral voices of our time. Now Europe's foremost philosopher and activist confronts his spiritual roots and the religion that has always inspired and shaped him - but that he has never fully reckoned with. The Genius of Judaism is a breathtaking new vision and understanding of what it means to be a Jew, a vision quite different from the one we're used to.

Not about Judaism
Revisado: 03-17-17
I thought this book was going to be in the mystical tradition, or at least rabbinical, about the genius of Judaism. Instead it was a long history (and present) of anti-Semitism in France.
