Many have heard the dire tale of the siege of Leningrad, but few know how the Russian people found solace in their literary heritage and resolve in the music of Shostakovich. Just as musicians aboard the Titanic chose to spend their final moments enveloped in song, so the people of Leningrad often died with Pushkin on their lips and the powerful rhythms of Shostakovich, Tchaikovsky and others echoing in their ears and flowing from their emaciated fingers. I thought this book was going to be in the mystical tradition, or at least rabbinical, about the genius of Judaism. Instead it was a long history (and present) of anti-Semitism in France.
