Hit or Miss
Revisado: 10-16-22
This was a very in depth argument around the role of cities in human history. Many of the chapters I enjoyed and intrigued me, but a number of others bored me or I had little interest in. If you liked how the chapter began, then it was worth finishing, but if you didn't like the premise or content of the chapter then it lasted forever. Interesting read for a historian like myself, not sure how many others would get into it much less dedicate this much time to the argument the author makes.

Historia
Kimi’s Obaachan, her grandmother, had always been a silent presence throughout her youth. Sipping tea by the fire, preparing sushi for the family, or indulgently listening to Ojichan’s (grandfather’s) stories for the thousandth time, Obaachan was a missing link to Kimi’s Japanese heritage, something she had had a mixed relationship with all her life. Growing up in rural Pennsylvania, all Kimi ever wanted to do was fit in, spurning traditional Japanese cuisine and her grandfather’s attempts to teach her the language.

Interesting personal story in a difficult time...
Revisado: 09-20-22
The book follows the life of someone who experienced the Japanese internment camps and does a good job revealing how this event impacted many lives. However, the author does an even better job of going beyond this experience to showcase the fullness of a life in these circumstances. The joys, the sorrows, the hardships, and everything in between. Definitely worth a read!

Intriguing Plotline, but mediocre ending...
Revisado: 09-04-22
This book follows the lives of two women by setting the stage in the main storyline and then having most chapters flash back to earlier times. It was very entertaining and intriguing, although the main timeline moved painfully slow while the flashbacks were speedily catching up. However, that did not stop me from thoroughly enjoying the book. The only issue I took with the story was that it ended rather quickly and somewhat anticlimactically after having built up a lot of tension. Worth picking up to read!

Historia
Favereau takes us inside one of the most powerful sources of cross-border integration in world history. The Horde was the central node in the Eurasian commercial boom of the 13th and 14th centuries and was a conduit for exchanges across thousands of miles. Its unique political regime - a complex power-sharing arrangement among the khan and the nobility - rewarded skillful administrators and diplomats and fostered an economic order that was mobile, organized, and innovative.

In Depth look at the Mongols
Revisado: 08-10-22
This was a really well researched book on the Horde. It not only provided numerous details about the Horde, it also provided great insight into the mindset and worldview that Mongols utilized in their decision making. The author also did a phenomenal job of breaking some preconceived stereotypes about the Mongols that have existed for centuries. Great read for a historian looking to learn more about the Mongols.

Historia
This cultural biography tells the enthralling story of the high-achieving Black elites who thrived in the nation's capital during Reconstruction. Daniel Murray (1851-1925), an assistant librarian at the Library of Congress, was a prominent member of this glorious class. Murray's life was reflective of those who were well-off at the time. This social circle included African American educators, ministers, lawyers, doctors, entrepreneurs, US senators and representatives, and other government officials.

Very informative read
Revisado: 07-19-22
This was a very informative read on the life of Daniel Murray and provided many valuable insights into the lives and experiences of the black elite. The experiences of the black elite are often overlooked or not considered in history and this book helped bring that perspective to the forefront. Although this book does not cover everything that took place during that time, it does show the varied and changing experiences of wealthy Black individuals over the course of a person's lifetime.

Spanning millennia and continents, here is a stunningly revealing history of how the distribution of water has shaped human civilization. Giulio Boccaletti - honorary research associate at the Smith School of Enterprise and the Environment, University of Oxford - shrewdly combines environmental and social history, beginning with the earliest civilizations of sedentary farmers on the banks of the Nile, the Tigris, and the Euphrates Rivers.

Very interesting, but academic read...
Revisado: 07-07-22
I was intrigued by the premise of the book and the author did a good job of explaining his argument chapter by chapter. One note for readers would be that the author's style is very academic and there is not a lot of effort put into hooking the reader with entertaining side notes or even variations in how the book is read. This did not bother me, but some may have found the author's style to be more dry than other books they have read.
