William Walker was an interesting guy, and a much more successful military leader than I realized. his confidence- no overconfidence- is what really sticks out about the book though. he really believed his own propaganda that he was the gray eyed man of Destiny

I like Walter Lord, but this is not his most well-written book. it is very uneven but where it's good it's very good. particularly the parts around Guadalcanal seem pretty shallow, but the book's not really about the Battle of Guadalcanal. as it goes on it improves where he interviewed participants in the 1960s and '70s. all in all it's worth to listen. the narrator is solid and some of the stories are amazing. I was particularly struck by the Sailor who survived the sinking of the USS Helena and was so old he had been in the Klondike Rush.

Showalter's depth of knowledge on the first World War is borderline amazing. furthermore he manages to weave that knowledge into a great narrative. this isn't necessarily a book for everyone but if you've already read a lot on the first world war it's a great book.

this is a solid book, but not necessarily great. sort of a classic in the submarine genre, but it felt hurried and slightly out of touch. he did speak to many of the survivors of the early cruises of the submarine, but he almost never mentioned the bigger picture of the war.

The Royal Navy Without Excitement or Personality

I've read probably 30 books on the Royal Navy in the age of sail and this is easily the dullest. it is actually a story of the politics of the sailors in the Royal Navy from 1792 to 1801 and one of the things that jumps out is it really doesn't have enough documents to support the full book in any detail. This should have been an article.

Beyond that, when the documents do exist the author focuses on postulating about potential political movements instead of telling a good story. There are lots of interesting personalities that pop up, but you wouldn't know it from reading this.

From a strictly academic point the book's okay. it did add a bit to my knowledge of the royal Navy social structure, but beyond that God it was dull. but there was just enough to it that I actually plowed through the entire book. So, if you already know a ton about the Royal Navy and have read everything else there is enough here to justify reading this but beyond that it's just not worth the trouble.

is a stone cold brilliant memoir of a devout American Communist who moved to the Soviet Union in the mid-30s and then spent around 20 years in work camps and internal exile. just an excellent heart-rending book

I liked the introduction to a part of society that I know very little about but I happen to know quite a few people who came out of that society or at least they're grandkids.

Frankly, For me, the pre-war section was more interesting than anything else. Because I had no idea upper class and want to be upper class families where that strict with the girls still.

It did help explain a lot of stories of heard and read from American soldiers and airmen stationed in Great Britain during the war. They had a very difficult time getting anywhere with the posh girls and now I understand why.

I wish there had been a little more detail and statistics About these women and their families. Did these women represent one percent of the british population three percent? I have no idea after reading the book. But I'm sure that many middle class families follow the lead of these very wealthy families insofar as they could afford to.

Moves quickly covering a lot of history without becoming too bogged down in the details. For a general reader I can't an imagine a better introduction to the American whaling Industry.

Almost everyone including the biggest World War II Buffs have completely forgotten the incredibly dangerous and very important missions that lone B-24s flew sometimes thousands of miles into occupied Japanese territory. These were Recon missions, but the the Navy aircrews often use their big slow planes as bombers and sometimes even Fighters. It's an almost unbelievable War Story very well told.
