Historia
Miss Marple encounters a compelling murder mystery in the sleepy little village of St. Mary Mead, where under the seemingly peaceful exterior of an English country village lurks intrigue, guilt, deception and death. Colonel Protheroe, local magistrate and overbearing land-owner is the most detested man in the village. Everyone—even in the vicar—wishes he were dead. And very soon he is—shot in the head in the vicar's own study. Faced with a surfeit of suspects, only the inscrutable Miss Marple can unravel the tangled web of clues that will lead to the unmasking of the killer.

A typical Agatha Christie
Revisado: 01-11-25
It is quite wonderful the way Agatha Christy ties up the knots only to be unraveled by Miss Marple. And it is so well read. I am going to find other books read by this narrator. The book was fun.

Is it the author or the narrator
Revisado: 05-16-16
What disappointed you about A God Against the Gods?
I have three hours left of this book, but I can't go on. It is read so badly that I can't tell whether its the narration or the writing that makes the book unbearable. I stuck to it this far hoping its going to pick up. No. It is uniformly boring, the voices are horrible - especially that of the main character. I understand he was supposed to be croaking most of the time. But there is croaking and there is this croaking - awful to listen to.

Lovely story but unbearable narration
Revisado: 11-14-14
If you could sum up Anna Karenina in three words, what would they be?
Take it slowly.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
The narrator sounded hysterical whenever doing women's voices -- and a greater portion of the story is in women's dialogues. I can't take it any more. I am going to return this version and get David Horwitch's (sp?) version. This narrator has got rave reviews.

Historia
Late one night, exploring her father's library, a young woman finds an ancient book and a cache of yellowing letters. The letters are all addressed to "My dear and unfortunate successor", and they plunge her into a world she never dreamed of: a labyrinth where the secrets of her father's past and her mother's mysterious fate connect to an inconceivable evil hidden in the depths of history.

Boring and highly contrived.

That pretty much sums it up. To think of intellectualizing Dracula!!! Poor thing. Should leave him to likes of Stoker whose book chilled me to the bones (which is read by my favorite narrator, Robert Whitfield)!

Historia
The Spandau Diary -- what was in it? Why did the secret intelligence agencies of every major power want it? Why was a brave and beautiful woman kidnapped to get it? Why did a chain of deception and violent death lash out across the globe, from survivors of the Nazi past to warriors in this new conflict about to explode? Why did the world's entire history of World War II have to be rewritten as the future hung over a nightmare abyss?

Awful narrator
Revisado: 08-06-10
The story was interesting enough, but the narrator was most tiresome. I hope he returns to his day job, whatever it is! The accents were terrible, Hitler constantly sounded as if he was about to burst his blood vessels. The British accent, which seems to come easily to most Americans, was unrecognizable. And, the Indian accent...!!! Sounded nothing like even a parody of accents! This is the only book I have listened to at double the speed. Pity the author!
Awful.

Addictive!
Revisado: 08-06-10
This is not a book of high literature but material for the afternoon soap opera's -- like the " ... Housewives". There are some dialogues on classic literature and philosophy but those are not worth much. I like to listen to books that grab me immediately, that do not require any mental exertion and this is one of them.
I chose to listen to this book because of the reader, Robert Whifield. He is one of the best narrators, I think. I did find the voices of Cornelius and Jake a little tiresome, but they mesh into the story quite well. Whitfield sounds best in his own voice, of course. He is excellent. I am going to listen to "Churchill" read by him next. A definitely more challenging work than this book, but am looking forward to it.

Awful reading
Revisado: 02-26-10
The reading is simply awful -- monotonic, everybody sounds the same, and the reader has a strange accent. I just had to stop listening to it and buy the book as the story is interesting.
