Historia
Half-Korean, half-Japanese, Masaji Ishikawa has spent his whole life feeling like a man without a country. This feeling only deepened when his family moved from Japan to North Korea when Ishikawa was just thirteen years old, and unwittingly became members of the lowest social caste. His father, himself a Korean national, was lured to the new Communist country by promises of abundant work, education for his children, and a higher station in society. But the reality of their new life was far from utopian.

Heartbreaking
Revisado: 07-13-19
It's a frighteningly detailed firsthand account of a heartbreaking life. Although well written, it was so depressing. These are things we'll never see in the news.

Historia
In The Power, the world is a recognizable place: There's a rich Nigerian boy who lounges around the family pool; a foster kid whose religious parents hide their true nature; an ambitious American politician; a tough London girl from a tricky family. But then a vital new force takes root and flourishes, causing their lives to converge with devastating effect. Teenage girls now have immense physical power: They can cause agonizing pain and even death. And, with this small twist of nature, the world drastically resets.

disturbing role reversal
Revisado: 06-22-19
many of us wonder what would happen if the balance of power was flipped on its head. This book starts to explore that idea, and has some very graphic and disturbing scenes that I certainly hope would not become reality. However, it was very well written, and the story took turns that I definitely was not expecting. thank you for the ride.

Painful Family Legacies
Revisado: 05-30-19
I was (sort of) pleasantly surprised by how well someone without personal experience captured the complexity of the dysfunctional family as it is passed on to the next generation and the dark, ugly side of humanity. It was uncomfortably realistic. I connected with each narrating character despite how different they were from each other with the exception of Kent, who creeped me out and often made me so angry that I yelled at him while listening in my car.
I think, and this is strictly my opinion, that Annie is a wellspring that wasn't thoroughly tapped. Her voice seemed very detached. Maybe it was on purpose, considering what she was holding inside for so many years, but I wanted to have more of her internal dialogue and conflict.
Overall, I enjoyed it. I laughed. I got angry. I had a moist eye at the end.

Historia
It all started with a mysterious blue note sewn into a wedding dress. Something blue. I’d gone to sell my own unworn bridal gown at a vintage clothing store. That’s when I found another bride’s “something old". Stitched into the lining of a fabulously feathered design was the loveliest message I’d ever read: Thank you for making all of my dreams come true.

Better than expected
Revisado: 01-25-19
When an especially heavy book selection begins to weigh me down, I like to break it up with a quick read (or listen) such a romance novel or youth fiction. This one made me laugh long and hard a few times, and that was an unexpected, pleasant surprise. Delightful and just what I needed to lift my spirits.

Historia
Kiese Laymon is a fearless writer. In his essays, personal stories combine with piercing intellect to reflect both on the state of American society and on his experiences with abuse, which conjure conflicted feelings of shame, joy, confusion, and humiliation. Laymon invites us to consider the consequences of growing up in a nation wholly obsessed with progress yet wholly disinterested in the messy work of reckoning with where we’ve been.

Whoa
Revisado: 11-18-18
This is a necessary listen for POC. The self-loathing that accompanies growing up black in America is so well described in this book. When ignored, it destroys is from the inside. When addressed, it leaves us more vulnerable to be destroyed from the outside. This book cut me deep, and I will return to listen again and again until I feel like I've bled enough to feel some release from the web of lies I tread every day.

Historia
It's 1934. Businesses went under by the hundreds, debt and foreclosures boomed, and breadlines grew in many American cities. In the midst of this misery, some folks explored unscrupulous ways to make money. Angel-faced John Partlow and carnival huckster Ginger LaFrance are among the worst of this lot. Joining together they leave their small-time confidence scams behind to attempt an elaborate kidnapping-for-ransom scheme in New Orleans.

The Martyred Hero gets shafted again (spoiler)
Revisado: 09-27-18
It's a well written story, but it bummed me out. I'm today's race-focused social atmosphere, it's particularly difficult (as A Black woman) to get through these Jim Crow Era stories without feeling a mix of sadness and anger. I feel like it's just everywhere. It's at work when people complain about the protesters speaking up against police violence against people of color and Kaepernick's decision to display his own opinion on the matter in the media spotlight his life attracted. It's in the elevator when a woman frantically jabs the button to close the door before I can get on, then clutches her purse for the entire ride despite the fact that I would have to abandon my bike to steal it (and then run where? To the other side of the elevator?).

Poor sound quality
Revisado: 01-09-15
The music from the intro and outro is loud, but the voices are not. There is also similar imbalance when sound effects are added. The English narrator is crisp, but the French one is a bit fuzzy. There is some echo as well. Although I like the idea of bilingual stories, this one didn't impress me.
