There are certainly aspects of the book that didn't age well, notably the frequent reference to rape, which in today's society I think we would often try to be sensitive to triggering someone that has actually experienced that trauma. That aspect aside, I think the story does a good job of being engaging and blisteringly cynical about the ills of society and highlighting the disparity in life, especially at the time. It's been a while since read other satire of that age, but I would say this is on par with Gulliver's travels but does not top Catch 22 in terms of humor and absurdity.

Silly semi-religious humor that feels like target audience is teenagers exploring their agnostic faith

Reminds me me of a mix between The Hobbit and The princess Bride. I found this book based on a Reddit thread about humorous books, and in my opinion this under delivered compared to other books that I've read from that same thread, such as catch-22. The humor elicits an occasional nose snort from cleverness but overall it feels immature. There are plenty of throwbacks and references to biblical scriptures that I was vaguely aware of but I'm sure plenty of them went over my head, and in that sense the humor felt more derivative than the absurdity I was looking for. However, on a bright note, the narrator is fantastic.

Rating this as a 5 if you're into investigative reporting in the financial sector, but I doubt this book is for everyone. The author sets it up as if it is going to be a thrilling conclusion, but in reality the consequences are a little anticlimactic.

It's an engaging hook but the rest of the book feels like it could be written by any decent generic fiction writer of the time. I'd half expect to find this book in a grocery store aisle. The book has a good-ish moral without coming of too preachy, but it's not original or that profound. Fun enough but I wouldn't recommend it to someone looking for depth.

An idealized love story with a frankness that isn't common from the genre of this age

This is a fascinating peek into what idealized love was imagine as in that day and age, but also there's an honesty to infidelity of men and women. I'm not sure I completely grasp how much of this is reflective of actual behaviors of etiquette and norms back then. I will say that this wasn't my favorite book, but for its uniqueness and quality of narration I'm happy to have experienced it.

Observant, tragic and uniquely well written, but not for me

This book is tragic, with no final dose of hope other than the open-ended last line. It wasn't enough for me to feel happy about the experience. The theme of traditional Nigerian religions in contrast to a strict Christian household, and an abusive father, are so unfamiliar to me that I can say I'm glad I read the book. I've had the fortune to be able to choose to be an atheist as an adult, and I find books even conveying experiences in a strict religious setting to be a chore to finish. So in that context I say, it's a powerful book but not for me and not sure I'd recommend it to anyone of my sentiment.

Not exactly what I wanted. Don't start here with Nelson unless you've covered other books about him.

I was hoping to learn more about Nelson in general first, but got a heavy dose of Trafalgar, interspersed with some general history before and after that particular battle. it's a weird contrast of zoomed in and 10,000ft view. I didn't think it really explained enough about Nelson's hero status before the battle.

Storytelling in this is more compelling to a modern book compared to the Iliad

I listen to both The Iliad and the Odyssey by this translator. For someone who may not be interested in doing both, I would say the Odyssey is essentially standalone and you don't have to do The Iliad beforehand. The Iliad is much more a recounting of warfare, which might have inspired the Greeks about their heritage thousands of years ago but didn't really do anything for me in 2025. on the other hand odysseus's story is much more universally compelling. however the translations of both are quite good in terms of natural speech, notwithstanding the artifacts that the author intentionally tries to incorporate to reflect the original Greek pros.

Disjointed story never resonated; not going to continue the series

I was hoping that I would enjoy this book similar to John Dies at the End but this never did it for me. It has a similar writing style but the story is annoyingly disjointed, almost as if it was written in sections while playing a game of "Yes, and..." and "Yes, but..." and the game only stopped after getting to the punisher's required word count. Maybe Jason needed to buy a new pool or something -- which good on him. But the story kept going longer than it should have. It was a chore to continue more than half way through. Also, the protagonist, antagonist and side characters aren't that compelling. They all seem to be varying degrees of unredeemable.

While it can be enjoyable and snort-out-loud at times, sometimes I feel like Pargin's writing reads like a resynthesized Reddit meme thread or, if I'm being cynical, an AI story trained on Reddit. Granted, I haven't written a book so I feel like I'm in no place to critique harshly. But I say least would have enjoyed a more condensed story with slightly more redeemable characters.

there are fun parts to this book that made me chuckle but honestly it's too pop sci-fi comedy for me to get into. if you're looking for something easy to listen to then maybe this is a good choice.
