Thoroughly enjoyable!
Revisado: 08-10-17
This story is a very good Dickens tale, full of sharply depicted characters, some very loveable, others not, and a plot that keeps you asking what comes next. I did not want to stop listening, and I did not want the story to end! I wish this tale was part of a longer story, a novel. All Dickens fans should love this story.

Virtually all Americans above a certain age hold strong opinions about Douglas MacArthur. They either worship him or despise him. This gripping narrative of the General's life is moving because he was a man of vision - majestic, though tragically flawed.

An amazing man, an exceptional book
Revisado: 07-13-17
MacArthur was one of those men who was the perfect person at the right place and the right time in World War II...but his whole life was an adventure that was outstanding...truly he was a giant on the world stage...his talents as a military commander were exceptional...his personality was complex and confounding....he was a giant ego but he measured up to his self-assessment....he served as virtual dictator of Japan for five years and put in place a healthy democracy that survives today...and in the end he over-reached and brought about his own demise as a commander. His complex story is told by one of the best history writers of the 20th century...who was himself a Marine officer in the Pacific battles during the time MacArthur was defeating Japan. Manchester clearly admired MacArthur...but he did not over-state his subject. I read the print version of this book twice, and I have listened to the audiobook twice. It is a treat!

Historia
"If there is any life that is happier than the life we led on our timber ranch, it must be the sort of life which I have not read of in books or experienced in person," wrote Mark Twain, and now you can share in that experience. The beloved American humorist spent seven years on a "pleasure trip" through the untamed wilderness of Nevada. Twain intended to spend three months touring silver mines, but the lure of rough terrain and comfortable clothes proved irresistible - as will this vibrant travelogue.

Several laughs per page...so to speak...
Revisado: 07-13-17
In the mid-1860s Mark Twain travelled from Missouri to Nevada Territory by stagecoach, hung out for a while, then went on to San Francisco, and then to Hawaii. Along the way he mined for gold and silver, wrote for local newspapers (his first paid writing work) and had many damn funny adventures...at least the way he remembered it all, it was funny. In this book you will hear a lot of info that is true about the West in the old days...Indians, cowboys, outlaws, miners, idiots galore...but you will also get exaggerations of all of those characters as a bonus...so you see the real thing, then you see it cockeyed and hilarious as well. You will perhaps also realize that a lot of stuff you have seen in movies about the West came from Twain...descriptions of outlaws especially. This book is highly entertaining...I read the print version three times before listening to the audiobook...and I will listen to it again when I need to be cheered up.

Revisado: 07-13-17
This audio is the best narration of the Bible I have encountered. It is exceptional...very easy to follow...the narrator uses excellent emphasis and pausing so that the meaning of sentences is quite clear. Also his voice is clear and enjoyable to hear. Highly recommended. And this version of the Bible is in clearly understandable modern English.

A greatly entertaining and humorous book...
Revisado: 07-13-17
First I read the print version...at least three times over the years...then I found this audiobook, which I have listened to twice.
This is a wildly humorous account of a real voyage Twain took in accompaniment with some travelers on a trip to Europe and the Holy Land in 1870. As with all of Twain's travel literature, the book includes real information, facts, descriptions, about the trip and the travelers, but he also makes fun of himself and his co-travelers....exaggerating at times, but always very humorous.
Interestingly, this was Twain's FIRST book...except for a collection of short stories...and it sold more copies in his life than any other one of his books. It established him as a major writer, and it put many dollars in his pocket.

A great collection of inter-related short stories...if you like Steinbeck, you will love this book. I read the print version many years ago, and I enjoyed the audio version greatly. Steinbeck loved people, and he presents here some touching, engaging stories of common folks. This book is similar to his The Long Valley.

Over the past hundred years, scholars have attacked the historical truth of the Gospels and argued that they were originally anonymous and filled with contradictions. In The Case for Jesus, Brant Pitre taps in to the wells of Christian scripture, history, and tradition to ask and answer a number of different questions, including: If we don't know who wrote the Gospels, how can we trust them? How are the four Gospels different from other Gospels, such as the lost Gospel of "Q" and the Gospel of Thomas?
