The story was good and this book was well-written but the narration was horrible! I think I would have enjoyed this audiobook if the narrator was different. David Colacci’s voice is so monotone and dull that it would be better suited to a sleep story. His voice

I liked this book a lot. I knew there would be a twist because the book’s description said as much, but I never guessed what that twist would actually be until it happened. In fact, after the initial twist there were a few more surprises yet to come. I won’t say more because I don’t want to spoil it for anyone who has yet to read the book.

As a last comment, I give high marks to the narrator. She was very good and she differentiated the various voices in the book well.

I enjoyed listening to this book, although it seems odd to use the word ”enjoy” for such a disturbing story. Kevin Pierce did a fantastic narration, as usual.

I almost didn’t buy this book because I knew about the Susan Powell case from watching it unfold in the media. I’m glad I did, though. This book gives a lot more detail than the media did (naturally). It’s well-written and really held my interest - I couldn’t put it down!

Also, the narration is very good. This is the second book I’ve listened to that was narrated by Kevin Pierce, and I really like his style of narration. I’m going to look for more books narrated by him.

Overall, I recommend this book even if you think you’re familiar with the case. It’s worth the listen!

I really enjoyed this story, despite the sad subject matter. The narration was good, and the storytelling was factual and detailed but kept me on the edge of my seat. I appreciated the 2015 follow-up epilogue, too.

The subject was deadly boring

This is an extremely thorough book on the life of a man who happened to be king. The problem that I had with this book is that the subject matter was deadly boring. I enjoy history , and I especially enjoy historical biographies. But King Edward was the pre-cursor of the Kardashians. He lived a hedonistic lifestyle and contributed very little to society most of his life. Even when he was King he was mostly inept, had little power, and continued to be very self-involved. This type of life makes for an extremely boring biography. To me, the subject matter of this book was so deadly boring that no amount of good writing or good narration could make it interesting or enjoyable.

Another reviewer wrote that she almost cried when she finished the book. I almost cried, too, from relief that I was finally done. Be very, very sure that you are interested in the subject matter before you begin this 22-hour long journey into the life of Bertie, King Edward VII.

The Narration is not pleasant

The story is OK, although slow at times. The real problem with this audiobook is the narration. The narrator’s voice is very raspy which makes it difficult to listen to the story. The voice is kind of like nails on a chalkboard.

I found the narrator’s voice so unpleasant that I tried to return the audiobook but could not because I purchased it too long ago.

In the future I will avoid all audiobooks read by Danny Campbell.

I began listening to this audiobook expecting a mildly entertaining, funny, and light-hearted story. Oh my. It was not that at all. There were parts of the book that were funny, and there were parts that were light entertainment. But the main story is how Darrell Hammond was horribly abused by his mother, and how that abuse has affected him in negative ways all throughout his life. It's a story with a punch. I cannot begin to imagine the internal pain that Hammond lives with every day.

Back to the book: The first part of the book drags in many places (way too much time spent on his childhood baseball games). Try to make it through the first half, because the second half of the book is when Hammond really begins to describe his painful experiences, both as an adult and as a child. The second half is where the book becomes engaging. We learn about the source of his problems, which is the extreme abuse inflicted on him by his mother. The second half of the book is disturbing to listen to, but it's compelling.

If you're interested in Darrell Hammond at all I recommend this book. Just know that this book is a real memoir of Hammond's painful life, and it can be heavy and depressing at times.

Frank Langella narrates this book beautifully. His voice is divine and his inflections make the reading interesting. Although I am a great deal younger than the author and have not heard of many of the names he drops, his stories are so entertaining that it doesn’t really matter. I enjoyed this book immensely and I recommend it.

Leah Remini narrates her own book in a very engaging and natural style. I was not a fan of hers before listening to this book. This audio book kept me engaged throughout the entire book. Leah's story is interesting and even though I found Leah's personality a little rough around the edges, she is ultimately likeable. Her story of the practices of Scientology serves as a cautionary tale.
