A beautiful mess
Revisado: 01-30-18
Part Foundation, part Snow Crash, part 2001 and ALL Stross geekiness,
The earlier parts seem to almost have the tounge-in-cheek satire feel of a Snow Crash, but the later parts become pretty serious exploration. Throughout all of it Stross is throwing his knowledge of computer parts in your face at ever turn.
I can't honestly say this is one of his better books. There are a fair number of things thrown in seemingly at random or because Stross wanted to make a political statement, but the scope is up there with Asimov's Foundation and it was a fun roller-coaster ride.
Outstanding character award goes to iNeko the cat (Neko is Cat in japanese.) Clearly, Stross knows cats.

Historia
With Glasshouse, Stross pens a Kafkaesque tale set in a 27th-century of teleport gates and mind-attacking network worms. After Robin awakes in a clinic, he struggles to summon details of his life, but too many of his memories have been wiped clean. More troubling is the stark awareness of immediate danger: someone is trying to kill him. On the run, Robin makes a desperate gamble and volunteers for what he hopes is the sanctuary of an unusual study at the Glasshouse. Once there, however, he realizes the true terror has only begun.

Stross at his best
Revisado: 01-29-18
Ive read a fair amount of Strosses work and I think this is one of his best to date. A strong story that balances mystery, action and psycho drama. A good treatment of the social implications of Star trek style transporters, he restrains his geeky tendencies to just a few plot vehicles

Historia
Almost 3,000 years after an extinction-level event on Earth, mankind seeks to regain its former glory, in a new world where magic and technology collide. Laney Herder, a commoner in the realm of Wexbury, finds herself thrust into the world of nobles and knights. At the side of her Lady Celeste, Knight of the Realm, she goes on an epic journey from being a simple chicken farmer to one of the greatest heroes of the realm, while helping the Lands of Sparo avoid a second Great Mage War.

A strong first novel
Revisado: 11-07-16
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
I listened to this book on my commutes. So it was free time, but it made the time go by.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Split between Laney and Celeste. Laney is our story teller so she is the deepest character and therefor automatically one of the most interesting. But i loved the image of the strong beautiful young woman in kinght's armor. (Though for some reason ny mind's eye sees her as blonde, even though the author tells us multiple times she's a redhead.)
Have you listened to any of Hollie Jackson’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
No, first time. I was fairly impressed. The trope of giving nobility a britt-like accent is an old one but it works.
Was Techromancy Scrolls: Adept worth the listening time?
yes
Any additional comments?
First off, lets be clear, this is a love story/action adventure between two young women. If that turns you off, it isn't for you.
The author has talent, but could have used a good editor. He has some trouble maintaining a separate "voice" for all his characters. In particular ALL his nobility say "Grand" when pleased. In one character's mouth, such an affectation helps create a unique personality. In many people's mouths, it muddies and confuses those lines of uniqueness.
He also at time uses repetitive phrases. A good editor would have pulled out both of these and made her re-write them.

A fascinating mess
Revisado: 09-19-16
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
Yes, with reservations.
Its an odd mess of ideas. Book 1 starts like an Arthur Clarke novel, and turns into a Steven King novel 2/3 of the way through. Book 2 turns into Jose Farmer's "riverworld", and thats as far as I've gotten so far...
All in all it plays much like Jazz. A jumble of discordant ideas that don't really fit together but inspire some fascination in their tension.
Was The Reality Dysfunction worth the listening time?
I commute long houirs. So any long book is worth its time if it can keeop me engaged, which this did.
