Historia
Robinson tells the story of John Ames Boughton, the prodigal son of Gilead’s Presbyterian minister, and his romance with Della Miles, a high-school teacher who is also the child of a preacher. Their deeply felt, tormented, star-crossed interracial romance resonates with all the paradoxes of American life, then and now.

Stunningly and Achingly Beautiful
Revisado: 04-26-22
The fourth book of the Gilead series, this one elaborating on John Ame’s friend and pastor’s wayward son, Jack Boughton and his life path.
It is heart wrenching and beautifully poetic.
I am hoping (oh please😉) for just one more book finishing Jack and Della’s story.

Poetic
Revisado: 12-06-16
Poetic literature with the heartbreaking history of the narrating character revealed mystically. Enjoyed the narration and the character voice personas.

Historia
Lila, homeless and alone after years of roaming the countryside, steps inside a small-town Iowa church - the only available shelter from the rain - and ignites a romance and a debate that will reshape her life. She becomes the wife of a minister, John Ames, and begins a new existence while trying to make sense of the life that preceded her newfound security. Neglected as a toddler, Lila was rescued by Doll, a canny young drifter, and brought up by her in a hardscrabble childhood.

"Salvation by grace"
Revisado: 09-15-15
Calvinism in reference to "predestination" was cited in the first two books ("Gilead" and "Home") including a a passage in "HOME" describing Lila's piqued interest of the subject during a porch interpretation setting the stage for this book. Lila" is a book that will stay with you long after the last read or listened to word: melancholy, heartbreaking, still with elements of hope and hard driven faith and yes...predestination/predetermination or "fate". The narrator captured all the characters nuances. I am hoping for one more "Gilead" book.

Simply Lovely
Revisado: 08-26-15
"Home", the second book of the "Giliead" trilogy is simply lovely. This book further explored intricately the Gilead Boughton family, in particular the 'ne'er do well brother, Jack and his sister Glory, as well as defining the family dynamics, of which impacted their life choices and consequences. The surprising ending of the story left me with tears running down my face in rush hour traffic. Suffice to say, I have downloaded "Lila" the final book for listening, however I will have to wait a day or two to finish absorbing "Home". IFinal review note: the narrator was excellent @ capturing all of the characters 😢

Historia
In 1956, toward the end of Reverend John Ames's life, he begins a letter to his young son, an account of himself and his forebears. Ames is the son of an Iowan preacher and the grandson of a minister who, as a young man in Maine, saw a vision of Christ bound in chains and came west to Kansas to fight for abolition: He "preached men into the Civil War", then, at age 50, became a chaplain in the Union Army, losing his right eye in battle.

mesmerizing
Revisado: 07-13-15
Beautiful story that captures the essence of a life lived in remembrance, long awaited grace, grief of pending loss, acceptance and finally forgiveness and astonishing revelation of love. The vocal narrator captured the Pastor's essence and soul. Recommended for those of us who treasure a great story in the line of Styron and Faulkner (with a MIDWEST setting.) I think I will now "pray and then sleep"
