A warm story told within south Australian culture at the end of the 19th century. Children and adults are carefully and insightfully presented including within indigenous cultures. Keen eye for the physical environment. Reader knows Australia after listening to this book.

How two people, both slaves, a woman and man, planned and executed an escape from Georgia to England a decade before the civil war. Story is heartening with both joys and sadness expressed with sensitivity. A realistic appraisal of all the evils of slavery in the United States. A fine book for teaching high school students about this most unfortunate era in our history.

Modernism is the British Library’s name for the writing style of this elegant novel. It requires more than one listening (two for me), similar to revisiting a painting in a museum. Recommend reading commentary about the book prior and during listening. Look for an annotated version to supplement listening.
