Revisado: 01-22-22

I am putting this review in a coma and sending it by spaceship to a nearby solar system. Once there, I will lasso the star at the center and drag it home behind my ship so I can give Project Hail Mary six brilliant stars.

This review is spoiler free.

This audiobook is everything I've ever wanted in a work of fiction. The main character is written and voiced to perfection. He's nerdily likable, and I rooted for him the whole way. The supporting characters were often laugh-out-loud funny or gasp-out-loud awesome. As for the stakes, just when I thought they couldn't possibly be higher, Weir raised them.

Just like with The Martian, there were problems galore. The goal seems insurmountable at first, but science teacher Ryland Grace is undeterred. Leaning heavily on his background in science, he chips away at it bit by bit. Unlike The Martian, Grace begins the story unaware of exactly what his goal is...or even WHO he is. While he possesses all his science-y skills, he has amnesia and can't remember anything personal, like his name or why he's on a space ship. That makes the first half of the book unique. The listener is figuring out what's going on and what needs to be done along with Grace, and it's riveting.

The book bounces between the present and the past as Grace overcomes the challenges that come with space travel while slowly remembering the purpose of the mission. Both present and past are chocked full of entertainment.

Can we talk about Ray Porter for a minute? Wow. His narration is spot on. He voices Ryland Grace in such a way that you can't help just loving him and cheering him on. His turns of phrase and pseudo-curses give the story a lively personableness that I found irresistable.

And Rocky. I'm not going to say who Rocky is other than he is a supporting character. But I will say that he is one of my favorite characters ever. He is written and voiced with heart. I absolutely love him and am inspired by his loyalty. Everyone should be so lucky to have a friend like Rocky. And a friend like Grace, who shows amazing and believable character growth through his relationship with Rocky. Truly, Project Hail Mary is a bromance like no other.

I can't say enough about how much I enjoyed this listen. Project Hail Mary is more than just an audiobook. It's a multi-faceted production, and it is my favorite work of fiction of all time. I will be listening to it again and again!

What did you love best about Beauty's Beast?

What an imaginitve story! I loved the strong female lead (a pirate!) and her best friend, also a strong woman. The story was fast-paced and full of action. There was a bit of romance too, which I loved.

What other book might you compare Beauty's Beast to and why?

It was like Beauty and the Beast meets Pirates of the Caribbean. Seriously. It was aswesome.

What about Hollie Jackson’s performance did you like?

She did a great job making each character sound different and believable. She had good pacing and had a great deadpan way of delivering on some dryly humerous parts. She made the story really enjoyable.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I laughed outloud to myself several times, and even though I listened to this while alone in the car, I even went, "Awww," a time or two at touching moments.

Any additional comments?

I will be listening to more of Paulina Woods. She is an author to watch.

Where does Must Love Breeches rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

This is a top-shelf romance told in a fresh voice. The loveable heroine, Isabel approaches problems with a scientific mind that proves intelligence is sexy!

What was one of the most memorable moments of Must Love Breeches?

An impromptu make-out session hastily arranged to divert suspicion. Super hot!

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I listened every chance I could get. It kept me entertained from first word to last. Well done, Angela Quarles!

Leah's spirit shines

Would you consider the audio edition of Troublemaker to be better than the print version?

I felt like Leah Remini was just sitting and chatting with me about all she's been through in her journey to celebrity and her devotion to Scientology. Her spirit shines in her narration as well as in the story itself. I'm amazed at all she has overcome, including upending her life for what she believes in, which is a life directed by her own moral judgment.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Troublemaker?

Leah's story was so touching. From beginning to end, her heart is on the page as she describes a lifetime of striving for approval from both Hollywood and Scientology. A theme that weaves through the book is that the only reliable source of that approval and validation has been her family and friends, the true ones who stood by her no matter what it cost them.

There's also plenty of laughs, including a scene involving a cookie dough misunderstanding that had me rolling.

What about Leah Remini’s performance did you like?

She comes across so genuine. She's just a girl from Brooklyn doing the best she could with what she had...and what she had was attitude and humor. Listening to her tell her story in her own voice truly left me entertained. I didn't want it to end.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I really felt for Leah. The search for approval and validation is such a common thing. So many people will be able to relate to her story. If she couldn't find these things within the Church of Scientology, no one can. She was utterly devoted to the religion to the point of donating millions of dollars and giving it hours of her live every single day. When she came across problems in the church, her first reaction was to evoke change from the inside rather than to leave.

Her attempts to reform her church were so heartbreaking to listen to, and her ultimate response to problems in the church was inspiring.

Any additional comments?

Religious or not, everyone will be able to relate to Leah's searching and struggles. Her strength will make others stronger. Her devotion to family and friendship will inspire others to do the right thing even when no one else is doing the right thing.

Would you consider the audio edition of Storm Damages to be better than the print version?

I've read Storm Damages in the kindle edition and just HAD to listen to it once I found out it was in audio book. The experience was awesome. Not only is Elizabeth & Gabriel's roller-coaster love story stellar, but the narrator's interpretation of the characters held me spellbound. I especially loved the sound effects. Like if Gabriel was talking to Elizabeth on the phone, her would sound a bit distant and crackly. If they were at a cocktail party, there were sounds of clinking glasses and socializing in the background. I'd never heard such details in an audio book before and found they set the mood and put me deeply in the story.

Who was your favorite character and why?

I loved Gabriel's character. The narrator really captured his arrogance and hidden vulnerability.

What does Anthony LeRoy Lovato bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

It was a pleasure to listen to Lovato's narration. Hearing the characters voiced just put a smile on my face while I was listening.

Is there anything you would change about this book?

The writing could have been tighter. There was some unnecessary repetition and some dwelling on details that didn't move the story forward. Nothing major, but not tight as it could be.

What was most disappointing about Andie Devaux’s story?

The heroine's voice didn't quite work for me. She was a very strong heroine in some ways, like standing up to the pack Prime, Eric and calling out "BS" when she sees it. However in other ways, she didn't quite resonate as a strong character for me. When her mate tells her to run from danger, she does. I wanted her to stay and fight. This would have been more active and fun to read than reading about her running, then returning to the scene of the fight and not knowing what had happened to her mate.

The mystery serves the story, but it felt out of character for this feisty gal.

I was also thrown for a loop by the reason the hero, Owen, and the heroine, Daniella, came together intimately after a lot of excellent tension. The tension evaporated with a certain revelation. To me, this wasn't enough to motivate them both to abandon their reasons for staying apart.

Another drawback for me was how cerebral the story was. This is a voice preference issue. I would have liked more of the story to unfold in dialog and action rather than in character internals.

Overall, just not as gripping a tale as I would have liked.

Which character – as performed by Carly Robins – was your favorite?

Eric

What would have made this romance irresistible?

The story just didn't quite do it for me. Just a taste thing. Someone else might just love this sexy shifter story.
