Historia
With Hope in the Dark, Rebecca Solnit makes a radical case for hope as a commitment to act in a world whose future remains uncertain and unknowable. Drawing on her decades of activism and a wide knowledge of environmental, cultural, and political history, Solnit argues that radicals have a long, neglected history of transformative victories, that the positive consequences of our acts are not always immediately seen, directly knowable, or even measurable.

Historia
Societally sanctioned competition for money, power, and fame promotes selfishness, personal alienation, and widespread inequality, especially in market-oriented economies. Yet many of those engaging in this competitive individualism—the competition for rewards and limited resources—yearn to act directly to promote a more civil, equitable, and sustainable society. Enlightened Self-Interest offers evidence-based insights into the societal and individual consequences of this cultural practice and an actionable alternative to it.

Historia
In The Righteous Mind, social psychologist Jonathan Haidt explores the origins of our divisions and points the way forward to mutual understanding. His starting point is moral intuition - the nearly instantaneous perceptions we all have about other people and the things they do. These intuitions feel like self-evident truths, making us righteously certain that those who see things differently are wrong. Haidt shows us how these intuitions differ across cultures, including the cultures of the political left and right.

I Wish the Author Stuck to What He Really Knew
Revisado: 11-19-23
The narrator for this book had an extra condescending tone that perhaps made my reading of it worse. I enjoyed the science in this book. The political commentary appears to be obsolete at this point in American history. Moreover I doubt that the author really understands the political ideas he discusses. He repeatedly said morality binds and blinds but seemed to miss his own blind spots. This book is an argument for why one morality is better when it claims to be something else. In addition, the fact that the author appears entirely blind to racism in discussion of facts from American history is shocking.

Historia
In Manhattan, a young grad student gets off the train and realizes he doesn't remember who he is, where he's from, or even his own name. But he can sense the beating heart of the city, see its history, and feel its power. In the Bronx, a Lenape gallery director discovers strange graffiti scattered throughout the city, so beautiful and powerful it's as if the paint is literally calling to her. In Brooklyn, a politician and mother finds she can hear the songs of her city, pulsing to the beat of her Louboutin heels.

In these funny and insightful essays, Roxane Gay takes us through the journey of her evolution as a woman ( Sweet Valley High) of color ( The Help) while also taking listeners on a ride through culture of the last few years ( Girls, Django in Chains) and commenting on the state of feminism today (abortion, Chris Brown).

Not Bad at All!
Revisado: 02-14-17
This book reminds us that feminism is a practice more than a monolithic system of beliefs. Feminism is in our lives, in the things we watch and read, and in the way we respond the world. The analysis in the book is solid even when I disagree with her opinions. Even when I was familiar with the works discussed in this book, Gay made me look at them from a different angle. More often, however, she pointed out things I had not yet seen or not full considered.
