Narration just kills this one
Revisado: 10-07-23
Breathy, baby-voiced narration detracts so much from the story I can’t finish listening to this.

Historia
A weekly newspaper dedicated to the weird and the wonderful (but mostly the weird), The Stranger Times is the go-to publication for the unexplained and inexplicable. At least that's their pitch. The reality is rather less auspicious. Their editor is a drunken, foul-tempered and foul-mouthed husk of a man who thinks little of the publication he edits. His staff are a ragtag group of misfits. And as for the assistant editor...well, that job is a revolving door - and it has just revolved to reveal Hannah Willis, who's got problems of her own.

Revisado: 04-23-22
An imaginative, original premise, endearing characters, humor, heartbreaking moments, well-paced writing and engaging storytelling. This little gem has everything. This was my introduction to Mr. McDonnell’s writing, and he is now among my very favorites. I recommend this one highly!

It’s okay.
Revisado: 03-28-22
An okay little mystery, but I don’t like it when authors make their characters so incredibly dumb. Why make the main character lie about looking for a lost dog, for heaven’s sake? When so many of the complications and the puzzle of the mystery rely on the main character lying to say she was looking for books instead of looking for a lost dog…it makes no sense. She is supposed to be a well-educated, 36 year old woman, but is completely controlled by men - an old high school boyfriend and her ex husband influence her every action. She can’t even go to the grocery store because she might run into someone who mentions her old high school boyfriend.
The references to Alice in Wonderland were fun.
Narrator was good,, and I would listen to other books she read, However, Zoe is pronounced Zo-ey. Two syllables.

Great story, horrible narration
Revisado: 02-10-22
Susan Wittig Albert always delivers great stories with strong central characters in an interesting setting. How sad to have an inconsistent, breathy, weak reading ruin the experience.

Kate McGuire’s life was sweet in Manhattan before she lost her restaurant job and fiancé both. But sometimes that’s just the way the cookie crumbles, and soon she finds herself starting from scratch in the island town of Coral Cay, Florida. It has everything she’s looking for: sunny beaches, friendly locals, and a Help Wanted sign in the bakery shop window. Once she convinces the shop’s crusty owner Sam Hepplewhite to hire her, Kate can’t tie on her apron fast enough. Little does she know that trouble, like warm dough, is on the rise.

Historia
Patricia Campbell's life has never felt smaller. Her ambitious husband is too busy to give her a goodbye kiss in the morning, her kids have their own lives, her senile mother-in-law needs constant care, and she's always a step behind on thank-you notes and her endless list of chores. The one thing she has to look forward to is her book club, a close-knit group of Charleston women united by their love of true crime and paperback fiction. At these meetings they're as likely to talk about the Manson family as they are marriage, motherhood, and neighborhood gossip.

I was really pretty excited about this book, I thought the premise sounded really promising. However, the narration is so awful that I just can’t fight my way through this one. I will be returning it, and I recommend you listen to the sample before you purchase it. Please hire an actress and don’t attempt to read your own work.

Life had never been particularly kind to Annie Ramsey. When a handsome, kind stranger offers her another way, she must decide if she is brave enough to change her situation or if she dares to hope for more. Duncan Bray could not resist the urge to help the young woman he found in the wintery chill of Yorkshire. Taking her to London and introducing her to a new life there would provide opportunities for her beyond what she ever could have imagined. But he never dreamed how this particular good deed would change everything for him as well.

What a let down
Revisado: 03-01-20
I enjoyed the first books in this series, but this one is a disappointment. A seriously abused woman is the central character, and her reaction to the abuse is just glossed over to the point that the loving hero sees fit to tease her about it? And a girl with no education, no experience, who is the product of an impoverished, abusive home is accepted by the London ton? All the characters seem to have no moral compass, as they lie and happily set about making fools of all their acquaintances. As far as the narration, unlike other books read by Jessica Elisa Boyd, this one is breathy, read in a husky whisper which is really annoying.

A great new world from Faith Hunter
Revisado: 01-11-20
Faith Hunter has once again created a new world that pulls the reader in from the first word. Shining, her cats and her AI companions are surviving in a dystopian world ravaged by war. Shining is in a heart-breaking, terrifying situation and survives with strength, intelligence and humor. Her discussions with Jolene are really funny, but at the same time, the tragic history of Shining and her friends is woven into every scene. I strongly recommend this one - and I want more from Shining and the cats!
