Historia
As a panicked world goes into lockdown, Lucy Barton is uprooted from her life in Manhattan and bundled away to a small town in Maine by her ex-husband and on-again, off-again friend, William. For the next several months, it’s just Lucy, William, and their complex past together in a little house nestled against the moody, swirling sea. Rich with empathy and emotion, Lucy by the Sea vividly captures the fear and struggles that come with isolation, as well as the hope, peace, and possibilities that those long, quiet days can inspire.

Thoughtful reveries on the pandemic
Revisado: 02-15-25
Loved this like I love most Strout books. Listening in 2025, there are some parts that made me cringe a little, but it’s a great time capsule of sorts.

Historia
In 2029 the United States is engaged in a bloodless world war that will wipe out the savings of millions of American families. Overnight, on the international currency exchange, the "almighty dollar" plummets in value, to be replaced by a new global currency: the "bancor". In retaliation the president declares that America will default on its loans. With "Deadbeat Nation" being unable to borrow, the government prints money to cover its bills. What little remains for savers is rapidly eaten away by runaway inflation.

Interesting concept, poor execution
Revisado: 02-02-25
It’s like an essay that was wrangled into fiction. Couldn’t connect to the characters or storylines. The reader was nearly unendurable, but I managed to listen to the end. I love Shriver, but did not enjoy this book.

Historia
When her father dies, Kay Wilkinson can’t cry. Over 10 years, Alzheimer’s had steadily eroded this erudite man into a paranoid lunatic. Surely one’s own father passing should never come as such a relief. Both medical professionals, Kay and her husband Cyril have seen too many elderly patients in similar states of decay. Although healthy and vital in their early 50s, the couple fears what may lie ahead. Determined to die with dignity, Cyril makes a modest proposal.

Parallel universes!
Revisado: 01-05-25
I love that Shriver described all the alternate lives they might have lived, including a very sci fi one. This reminded me a lot of the ending of North Woods (I recommend that on audible as well).
I wish we all could have the choice of comfortably ending our lives at the time of our choosing.

WAY too political
Revisado: 09-13-24
This was nausea inducing due to the overwrought political posturing. I had to stop listening toward the end. I would have much much rather heard more about her personal experiences rather than her anger that police had access to masks during the riots of 2020 and other rants irrelevant to the book’s subject.

Historia
Emi Vargas, whose parents helped save the world, is tired of being told how lucky she is to have been born after the climate crisis. But following the public assassination of a dozen climate criminals, Emi’s mother, Kristina, disappears as a possible suspect, and Emi’s illusions of utopia are shattered. A determined Emi and her father, Larch, journey from their home in Nuuk, Greenland to New York City, now a lightly populated storm-surge outpost built from the ruins of the former metropolis. But they aren’t the only ones looking for Kristina.

Marxist claptrap
Revisado: 10-26-23
I got halfway through this book and just couldn’t stomach any more of the communist propaganda. One of the characters even suggested doing violence on the families of people who they called ‘climate criminals’ of the past. With what is happening in the world right now, that was repulsive to me. Of course, the author couldn’t have known what was going to happen when he wrote the book, but still…
The obvious Marxist leanings of the story would’ve been one thing, but the characters were never well developed and I didn’t come to like any of them. The only reason I’m giving it two stars is because the author didn’t fall into the trap of writing in the present tense that is so popular these days. Thank you for that!
I made a mistake with this one— wasted a valuable audible credit.

Superb family drama
Revisado: 11-07-22
If you like Jonathan Franzen, you will like this book. It is so difficult to find a good family drama these days and this is it! It kept my interest through the whole thing and was evenly paced. The story was relatable and the characters were well drawn. I wish more of these types of stories would be published.

Great book! Makes you think about life and meaning
Revisado: 06-30-22
A very clearly written, interesting book with incisive thoughts about what it means to be human-- our purpose, our ethics, our inconsistencies. McEwan never fails to disappoint, and I am still thinking about this book days after finishing. That's a rare feat these days!

Worthwhile, interesting story, despite some sexism
Revisado: 06-30-22
This kept my interest and I found his stories of his patients and his family to be touching. I was taken aback at some of his statements regarding women though. There was a part about a dying elderly woman who needed help urinating, and in the description he wrote "I parted her doughy thighs" !?! WTF. Even a dying old woman is expected to have svelte, tight thighs I guess lol. I think he secretly had the hots for "Tina" too. It came through in the writing. Still and all, I liked the book a lot and the doctor seemed sincere and kindly.
