Gut punch
Revisado: 01-25-25
Beautiful clear original writing. It took me back to dating and the way we get angry at ourselves for not being indifferent, detached, as if needing someone and craving them and wanting them to love us ot at least like us is such a shameful thing. Some of us cannot compartmentalize love and passion. We are in it. The worst times are when you are with someone and have to pretend you are not in it

Loved characters and narrator!

The narrator was TERRIFIC. And another gem from this author, who has a knack for writing funny complex female characters — which always stands out in male authors

Historia
Douglas Petersen may be mild-mannered, but behind his reserve lies a sense of humor that seduces beautiful Connie into a second date...and eventually into marriage. Now, almost three decades later, they live more or less happily in the London suburbs with their moody seventeen year-old son, Albie. Then Connie tells him she thinks she wants a divorce. The timing couldn’t be worse. Connie has planned a month-long tour of European capitals, a chance to experience the world’s greatest works of art as a family, and she can’t bring herself to cancel. And maybe going ahead is for the best anyway? Douglas is privately convinced that this landmark trip will rekindle the romance in the marriage, and might even help him to bond with Albie. Narrated from Douglas’s endearingly honest, slyly witty, and at times achingly optimistic point of view, Us is the story of a man trying to rescue his relationship with the woman he loves, and learning how to get closer to a son who’s always felt like a stranger.

Perfect narration, loved the characters, very funny but certainly a touching and at times hard to read because hits so close to home for so many relationships, especially marriage and teen/parent

Every family has its problems. But even among the most troubled, the Plumb family stands out as spectacularly dysfunctional. Years of simmering tensions finally reach a breaking point on an unseasonably cold afternoon in New York City as Melody, Beatrice, and Jack Plumb gather to confront their charismatic and reckless older brother, Leo, freshly released from rehab. Months earlier, an inebriated Leo got behind the wheel of a car with a 19-year-old waitress as his passenger.

Historia
The summer that Nixon resigns, six teenagers at a summer camp for the arts become inseparable. Decades later the bond remains powerful, but so much else has changed. In The Interestings, Wolitzer follows these characters from the height of youth through middle age, as their talents, fortunes, and degrees of satisfaction diverge. The kind of creativity that is rewarded at age 15 is not always enough to propel someone through life at age 30; not everyone can sustain, in adulthood, what seemed so special in adolescence.

Loved this. Funny, familiar, original
Revisado: 04-26-24
I was in a reading rut when this book came out and so glad Audible and Goodreads led me hear. Hilarious, sardonic but full of warmth and compassion. Really took me back to the 80s.
It would have been easy to make Ash and some of the others total stereotypes in an effort to lampoon their privilege but Wolitzer makes sure to give each character fully realized, rounded, generous but honest personalities.
My only criticism is that autism spectrum wasn’t in the DMV until 1994, and I doubt it would be common parlance in the 80s? In fact I think many still said “idiot savant” in the late 70s!!
Love this narrator too. Wish she did more! I had already listened to her Lisa Jewell novel.
This reminds me of Jonathan Franzen though, obviously, far less male.

James Acaster must be in it. Involve Phoebe Waller Bridge. Need a really funny leading guy. Rosamund pike maybe for jen or someone a little warmer maybe. I loved this book and the narrator was perfection and made the dialogue even funnier

Historia
A successful film professor and podcaster, Bodie Kane is content to forget her past—the family tragedy that marred her adolescence, her four largely miserable years at a New Hampshire boarding school, and the murder of her former roommate, Thalia Keith, in the spring of their senior year. Though the circumstances surrounding Thalia’s death and the conviction of the school’s athletic trainer, Omar Evans, are hotly debated online, Bodie prefers—needs—to let sleeping dogs lie.

Fantastic

Funny, topical, smart. Covers so much ground in an original way. Highly recommend, esp to those who were in HS or college in the early 90s!
