The Merry Band of Pirates stopped the enemy from stealing a Sentinel, and destroyed its Elder starship, so why weren’t the Pirates planning a victory party? The enemy was not what they thought it was. It was much, much worse.

Just the best space series I have found.
Revisado: 02-11-25
After getting through this series so far I felt I needed to write a review. Simply put-- It is the most entertaining series of this genre I have found. It's complete, does not leave sub-plots dangling and is extremely well presented.

This is a tale of sorrow, a tale of survival, a tale of one man's search for meaning in his universe, and how that search, and the indomitable will that drove it, gave birth to a legend.

Don't understand the positive reviews-it's bad.
Revisado: 02-06-25
Not sure what I am missing but after over 200 audiobooks I felt I needed to write a rare review on this. It's just bad.
I do like the genre, but this reads like a poorly written young adult romance novel. There are many glaring omitted details that would help a reader along, and the plotline(s) often lead to dead ends with no effect to the main storyline. Again, I write very few reviews, but this book should be avoided if you enjoy good writing, solid plots, and detailed character development. The reader does not help with a very youngish and not very cultured reading voice.

Historia
The Chivalry series follows young William Gold, who runs away from London to follow the Black Prince, from the killing fields of France, through life as a routier and criminal, and to redemption with the Knights of Saint John, further disillusion and an eventual career as a professional soldier and knight. Rich in the details of life in the High Middle Ages, the series also deals with modern issues about the role of violence in society, rules of conflict and war, and the price that people pay for using violence.

Phoned in, meandering storyline that made no sense
Revisado: 01-14-25
I have thoroughly enjoyed the previous entries in this series but this one seemed to be phoned in. There seems to be no central storyline and the book meanders through myriad of confusing settings and mini-plots. The political schemes and positions involved are not explained very well and you find yourself thinking too much on what is happening. Several instances of incomplete conclusions to various subplots. Just not a good listen at all. Peter Noble is excellent as always but that is not enough to overcome poor writing.
This one just felt like a filler piece full of nothing important so the author could make a little more money off the series. I would probably try the next one in the series with caution. I do really like all the previous books so I hope the author gets back to solid writing.

Historia
Author of the National Book Award-winning All the Pretty Horses, Cormac McCarthy is one of the most provocative American stylists to emerge in the last century. The striking novel Blood Meridian offers an unflinching narrative of the brutality that accompanied the push west on the 1850s Texas frontier.

Where to begin???
Revisado: 01-12-24
McCarthy certainly can fill out he detail with very vivid description and scene setting- you can almost smell the atmosphere(s) that develop throughout the book. That being said, this might be the MOST violent and unsympathetic portrayal of the mid 19 century American West ever. Period. I shudder to think of being in that environment if that's how it really was.
I did enjoy it, however you do find yourself asking - WHY? a lot while listening. There is little character development, other than a couple of the main pro er antag - Not sure if there are any protagonists or good guys in this book. It is a violent dream world that at times will make you catch your breath with the nonchalant killing and loss of life.
Certainly not for everyone, and i question whether a hard copy would be a better option with this one. Still if you can stomach the tour de force of gore and misery then go for it!

Enjoyable but a bit on the young adult end.
Revisado: 12-20-23
The reader is excellent and might be the reason the book holds together. I can't say I would get through this if I were reading it in a traditional book. It reads like a young adult novel- that might be the intent though. It is enjoyable and easy to listen to but the plot is VERY predictable most of the time, and sometimes it is not put forth in a believable context (if there is a believable context for a plot in the very distant spacey future.)
As mentioned it is enjoyable and easy to listen to and if this is your thing it's probably great. I will probably get the second book in the series when I get done with some real history stuff. I have enjoyed a lot of Sanderson in the past.

Possibly the most boring listen EVER.
Revisado: 11-29-23
Lots of blah, blah, and nothing happens. Just when you think something is about to happen- BOOM- more boring dialogue and unnecessary filler. Nevertheless I stuck it out to the end. Wished I hadn't now. I do like the premise and idea behind it but the execution and and writing are not for me.
DO NOT BELIEVE the super positive reviews. I actually went back after my initial review and tried to find what the super positive reviewers heard, and it's just not there. I don't understand what these individuals heard but the book is TERRIBLE. I have gotten at least 150 audible books and only rarely will return one. This one will go back.

Not sure if I'll finish it...
Revisado: 08-12-22
Not sure if this one will get returned or not. I'm through the first several hours and can't seem to get into this. I love history and when combined with good fiction by a competent writer it is my favorite genre. Even though it says unabridged it feels to me like a lot of detail is left out and then pops into the storyline at a later time when it becomes needed to keep the story going. Might give it a few more hours to see if it shapes up but it's looking like a return may be in order. I can't see why all the positive reviews yet. The reader is a bit too dramatic and his deep voices all sound the evil villain from a sci-fi movie which is distracting for me.

The problem with lying about having a super weapon is that the bad guys might believe they have nothing to lose by doing something stupid that both sides will regret. Or, they might just call your bluff. Either way, the Merry Band of Pirates need a plan to deal with the Fallout.

Okay- will try the next book.....
Revisado: 01-17-22
Storyline is a bit trite but OK and the characters are mostly interesting. The author tends to draw out the battle scenes a bit and there are some really dull spots that I feel were unnecessarily long and inserted only to stretch the book out a bit. It is entertaining to some extent and worth trying the next in the series. I think it is also written for younger audiences as there is not a lot of character depth making it a hair sophomoric. A bit predictable too.

The deadly paranoia of Domitian gives way to the Golden Age of Trajan and Hadrian - but even the most enlightened emperors wield the power to destroy their subjects on a whim.Empire is filled with the dramatic, defining moments of the age, including the Great Fire of 64 A.D, Nero’s persecution of the Christians, and the astounding opening games of the Colosseum.

Not nearly as good as the first book
Revisado: 12-07-21
After enjoying the first book in the series I went for the second. I found the fictionalized characters boring and weak in this one. Although the history is there there was just not enough storyline to keep it together for me. Also is seemed to me that in order to compensate for lack of quality characters the author indulged in a penchant for rabid homoeroticism. Of course there was this behavior going on in those times, but turning many major male characters in the book into mincing, boy hungry, middle aged perverts is unnecessary.
Again the first book was very enjoyable- this one not so much.
