Historia
Healing the Shame That Binds You is the most enduring work of family relationship expert and New York Times best-selling author John Bradshaw. In it, he shows how unhealthy toxic shame, often learned young and maintained into adulthood, is the core component in our compulsions, co-dependencies, addictions and drive to superachieve.

Loved the meditations provided in this book; also the latter chapters on synchronicity and finding your bliss, things I’ve forgotten recently.

Historia
This is Kazuo Ishiguro's profoundly compelling portrait of a butler named Stevens. Stevens, at the end of three decades of service at Darlington Hall, spending a day on a country drive, embarks as well on a journey through the past in an effort to reassure himself that he has served humanity by serving the "great gentleman," Lord Darlington. But lurking in his memory are doubts about the true nature of Lord Darlington's "greatness," and much graver doubts about the nature of his own life.

Brilliant craftsmanship of story through exquisite language
Revisado: 11-21-23
Fascinating all around, splendid, I daresay. A quintessential English butler is brought to life flawlessly, in a forward-driving narrative over the course of a few days, while he reaches back in reflection over a long and storied career with a former employer, Lord Darlington, who played a tangential role in events post WWI and during WWII. Psychologically compelling, historically fascinating, we get a glimpse behind the scenes of a great house and its inner workings, the personal relationships among employer and staff, staff among themselves, and the pride of professionalism among them —emotions suppressed barely under the surface, perhaps “leaking out” on occasion, but seldom acknowledged. Then, there are the things that are acknowledged, mistakes recognized too late, remorse expressed. The author expertly crafts his novel in a way that invites the reader into an understanding of subtleties and things not said explicitly. In doing so, the reader grows in empathy and understanding of the the characters, and gains tools for looking compassionately at their own life and relation to the world, the effect of their choices on the ultimate outcome of our lives, the hope for the remainder, and perhaps, resolve not to be bound by limitations once examined. This novel does what great literature is supposed to do, stays with the reader and compels contemplation on higher affairs long after the book is closed.

The Earth teems with sights and textures, sounds and vibrations, smells and tastes, electric and magnetic fields. But every kind of animal, including humans, is enclosed within its own unique sensory bubble, perceiving but a tiny sliver of our immense world. In An Immense World, Ed Yong coaxes us beyond the confines of our own senses, allowing us to perceive the skeins of scent, waves of electromagnetism, and pulses of pressure that surround us.

Fascinating glimpse into the senses of our fellow creatures

This was long and somewhat very granular for a non-scientist, but well worth the the time spent listening. I learned so much (mice sing! and other interesting facts of nature), and I am grateful to the author for compiling this material so thoughtfully.

Historia
For much of his life, historian Howard Zinn chronicled American history from the bottom up, throwing out the official version taught in schools - with its emphasis on great men in high places - to focus on the street, the home, and the workplace. Known for its lively, clear prose as well as its scholarly research, A People's History of the United States is the only volume to tell America's story from the point of view of - and in the words of - America's women, factory workers, African-Americans, Native Americans, the working poor, and immigrant laborers.

Important “alternative” history
Revisado: 07-02-23
A must-read for every American, in order to get a fuller perspective on our history. It leaves one with an imperative to act, an impulse to take up the call in the final chapter, to create a nation in furtherance with the noble ideals in our historical documents, even as we understand their authors’ intent contained limitations belying the words. We can envision and build a better world for all people.

A Treasure!
Revisado: 12-16-22
I really loved this book, am very grateful that I started it, completely unaware of the treasure I was unearthing. I was drawn by the title and swept into a life and time and place so vividly expressed that I felt I was there almost every step of the way. I appreciated the personal descriptions of music, film, political life of the particular times, of friendship and family and love, but I really felt into Pearl Cleage’s writing about writing ~ my only regret is that in listening to an audio version, mostly on my dog walks, I didn’t have a chance to jot down the many quotes that most resonated. Will seek out the written book so I can again feel the thrill of recognition, of “yes! - that’s it, that’s how it feels!” ~ shared with someone whose life is so different from my own, a tiny point of connection, communion.
