Generic YA novelettes wasting such a good setting

Although the World of Darkness has a vast amount of potential, these stories don't seem to sieze upon it in any meaningful way. I'm not sure if this is due to White Wolf meddling or if the authors simply weren't writing anything interesting.

This novel was foisted upon my by Audible after the novel I was listening to had concluded. I elected to give it a listen for a chapter and found it enticing.

It was refreshing to see the author use this mechanism of chapters functioning as self-contained stories that doubled as building blocks for the larger plot. It made getting through it significantly easier and made the world feel more organic. Everything seems to happen a day at a time, rather than all blurred together in a non-stop stream of action.

I also appreciate the usage of Yokai and other forms of Japanese folklore in a way that more accurately reflects the old stories.

When I ordered this story, I'd expected something similar to Brutal Kunning. Instead it takes a more heavily Inperial perspective, but that's not why I rate it so low. There are severe editing issues that detract from the story. The most severe of these is a point in Interrogation I where the story goes mute for several seconds.

This story is set in the late 1800s and no part of that has been excluded for modern pedantry.

I started reading this during my catechism as a supplement to the books suggested by my priest. Between my busy school, work, catechism, and exercise schedule, it took me months to get through this book. Ultimately, it taught me a lot about fronima and why the Orthodox oppose the Roman Catholics much more strongly than I would.

I happened to notice a couple of outtakes were left in, particularly in the later parts of the book. Additionally, the author states that summing up Orthodoxy as 'tradition' is faulty 20 minutes before she herself does exactly that. Despite these minor errors, this is a great overview of Orthodox thinking for the Westerner.

Although this holds up just as well as the first 2 Cain books, the formatting has been done poorly. After a while, I'd noticed the chapters would be marked halfway through the previous chapter.

The reader did a good job with the voices, each distinct enough to be recognizable. The story was also good, shifting perspectives and having details from each point of view play into the other side of the story.

I'd been meaning to read from authors like Dostoyevsky, but such texts are quite intimidating when you lack enough free time to maintain a hold of the narrative. After taking a brief job as a truck driver, I figured it was a good time to try Audible and use it for such texts. I'm grateful that I did, otherwise I'd be still somewhat ignorant of this amazing story.

Dostoyevsky does a great job of portraying a gambit of perspectives, from the pious monk to the learned man of science. The various Karamazovs all had familiar perspectives and responses that I might have had at various points in my life. Certainly, the plot of the book gave plenty of opportunity for these Karamazovs to show their depth.

The narrator did well enough, annunciating clearly and somewhat mirroring the tone of the passage. The issue is, of course, that such a long book can make it feel dry without multiple distinct voices. Still, I got what I wanted out of the experience.
