After not being completely enamoured with the last 2 entries into this series, I went into this book cautious and hesitant. Thankfully, the books feels fun and exciting much as the first 2 books did.

First things first: Luke Daniels is solid gold as a narrator. He has been an absolute cornerstone of these characters from the beginning. If they switched narrators I imagine many listeners (myself among them) would move on.

For the most part the story is very fun and moves along at a good speed. The new characters are a welcome departure from the norm, and their personal brand of magic is very entertaining. There are some genuine laugh-out-loud moments in the story (my personal favorite is Martin and his mysterious eye injury!) which I think the series has been lacking for a little while now.

Where the story stumbles briefly (and the other books have as well) is the business with the 3 Brits. The story slows perceptibly as the author explains the Brits and how they relate to one another. it's convoluted and a bit confusing and I imagine that's the point ....but after 2 books that were not all that great and one being heavily "Brit-centric" Mr. Meyer should try to move it along. Thankfully this section only lasts a short while, but it is a blemish on an otherwise very entertaining experience.

Overall, fans of this series will feel this is a welcome return to form and an exciting new direction for the series. I, for one, am very glad at this new direction and excited for the next book.

This book is aimed squarely at my generation: born in the late 70s and early 80s an raised on a steady diet of 80s video games, movies, the shows, and music. Will Wheaton is at his best narrating this...the material is right in his wheelhouse and it's easy to see that he really puts extra effort into his voices and descriptions. if you loved the movie....this is 10x better!

Is there anything you would change about this book?

The one thing that comes readily to mind is the narration. The narrator sometimes moves too fast for the story and it begins to detract from the experience after a time.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

The story itself was good. It had a very DaVinci Code-esque feel to it all, which I thoroughly enjoyed. Imagine Tony Stark as the main character in the DaVinci Code and you've got it pretty much nailed: Fast paced action coupled with appropriate doses of wit and humor.

Would you listen to another book narrated by Andrew B. Wehrlen?

I definitely would. He is a narrator that knows how to manipulate pace, timing, and intonation not only to control the flow of the story, but also to use it to contrast serious moments from lighthearted ones. This ability shines in the book, and helps make the experience all the better.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

I think I would go see it. I think that there is a definite sense of fun and humor injected into this book by the author, and I think that it would translate well on-screen.

Destroyer of Worlds Audiolibro Por J.F. Penn arte de portada

An exciting perspective on global terrorism

What did you like best about Destroyer of Worlds? What did you like least?

I liked that author's take on what a global terror even could be. Stepping outside the box and incorporating ideas from a culture that I'm not very familiar with added an exciting dimension to the book, as I was learning about this culture as I read.

I liked the ending the least. After all of the buildup and detective work, the pivotal scene seemed anticlimactic at best. It was on and then gone all too quickly for my taste.

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

Again, I thought that the ending was slightly thin and lacked the thoroughness that had gone into the rest of the book. It felt very abrupt and a little too "cookie-cutter" compared to the rest of the book. Then again, perhaps the first 3/4 of the book was so well-written, exciting and interesting that the ending could not keep up.

What about Veronica Giguere’s performance did you like?

She narrates at a good pace, and all of the characters sound distinct from one another. She ups the pace during action scenes and inserts timely pauses during critical thinking/ detective scenes which allow the reader to catch up and/or think of solutions for themselves.

Could you see Destroyer of Worlds being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?

Perhaps a movie but not a TV series. I could easily see the basic premise being made into something like Mission: Impossible.

What did you love best about Edge of Darkness?

Pretty much everything. The plot flows quickly and determinedly from one event to the next. The characters are dynamic and easy to relate to. There is a great balance of action, detective work, and personal events. The narrator "puts on and wears" the characters and fades into the story, letting the book shine.

What did you like best about this story?

All of the technology that Calder has at his disposal is really the star of the show. The augments define his character right from the get-go, and continue to influence events in the story all throughout the book. My favorite scene was his "activation" when he finally assumes complete control of them.

What does Shawn Compton bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

In a word? Everything. He has the ability to fade into the story and let the book shine, which I always say is the hallmark of a truly talented narrator.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Towards the end of the book, when Calder and Sierra grow closer and finally bond (trying not to spoil any of the plot here) does a great job bringing an anticipated plot arc to a close and also setting up the next book.

Anstractor Audiolibro Por Greg Dragon arte de portada

Exciting story that sometimes slows noticably

Would you listen to Anstractor again? Why?

I likely would not. The story, while detailed and well-written, seems to slow perceptibly in the middle when Rafian is sent on his "final exam". Though I realize that this is a crucial part of the book, I felt that some of the time and details could have been invested into other points in the plot. For example, I would have gladly traded some of the "final exam" events for more detail and events at the end of the book.

Additionally, I felt that there was a high level of (unnecessary) romance and sex in the book. Normally this does not bother me in the least, but I felt that it got to a point where these events and the resulting "relationship spaghetti" began to detract from the overall experience.

Would you recommend Anstractor to your friends? Why or why not?

I would recommend it. This book is an interesting introduction into the world of Rafian and Jumping. The beginning, where Rafian recieves his training, is particularly exciting.

Have you listened to any of Anisha Dadia’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I have not previously listened to anything performed by Dadia, so I cannot comment. I will say that she did a great job with Anstractor: Vestalia.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No it was not. my interest began to wane when the plot began to slow, and though I am glad I stuck through it I don't think I could listen to it all in one sitting.

What did you love best about The Savants?

Easily the most interesting aspect of the book is the cast of characters. Each one has strengths, weaknesses, and for lack of a better, (non plot-spoiling) term traits that play off of each other and make the whole team better. Here is a group of people that cannot function fully in a normal sense, but together they are great.

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

I loved the way the characters found a solution to the main plot point. My issue was the plot itself; it could have been a bit more original and exciting. All of the development and detail that went into the characters makes the plot pale a bit in comparison.

Which scene was your favorite?

The description of the reactor meltdown in Japan was vivid and well-written.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

It was not, though it could have been. It is easily approachable and a good length for an all-day listen.

Where does Furious rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

This book ranks in the upper half of the books that I've read thus far. The plot moves along nicely and the premise of the story (a mother trying to recover her children from human trafficking) resonates strongly.

Who was your favorite character and why?

I think my favorite character is Rage. She is complex and more furious than Faith actually is. Her character takes an interesting turn 3/4 through the book that only adds to the complexity.

What does Kate Rudd bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Her portrayal of Faith is something that I would not have been able to replicate in my own head. I'm a parent but not a mother, so the pain and determination that Rudd imparts to Faith really comes through for me.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Again, the big part of Rage being revealed was my favorite moment. It ites her personality together and fills in gaps that I was questioning earlier in the book. It serves to make her character all the more appealing.

3 out of 5 stars

Revisado: 09-30-16

Is there anything you would change about this book?

I felt that the book got off to a bit of a slow start. There were a few chapters that were interesting...most notably when the main character is learning about her implants and how to fully utilize their capabilities. However, the book in general runs a bit slowly in the first 1/4 before the plot really gets moving.

Would you recommend Veil of Shadows to your friends? Why or why not?

All in all I would recommend it to anyone looking for something in the scifi genre that has the feel of a videogame. The plot, once it gets going, is interesting and keeps flowing well. The characters and their interactions are really what keep the book going, most notably between the main character and her brother (for reasons that become apparent later in the book). The final chapters are full of action and move very quickly and do a great job of setting up the next book in the series.

What does Veronica Giguere bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Her portrayal of the characters (notably the military ones) was probably my favorite part of the book. She brings life to all of these characters and manages to keep them sounding very distinct. Her narration in the action-centered chapters is accurate and well enunciated; fast enough to keep the action going while not losing the reader in the pacing.

Did Veil of Shadows inspire you to do anything?

This book was interesting enough that I'm going to read the rest of the series, as I find the material, plot, and characters entertaining and want to know what ultimately happens to them.

Any additional comments?

Though this book is the second in a series, it is easy enough to pick up and read as a starting point for those interested in the genre. I do think that books in the series from here on out will not be quite as easy to pick up and jump in with, as there are several major plot events in this book that I can see being pivotal/critical to later books.

Would you consider the audio edition of Otherlife Dreams to be better than the print version?

I did not read the print version of the book, so I cannot accurately comment. I will say that the narrator did a very good job bringing the characters to life, which I believe the print version cannot replicate. The narrator has what I personally believe to be the most important quality in a narrator: the ability to disappear into the characters and story and bring the focus totally on the book.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Otherlife Dreams?

The book draws you in with an amusing yet fascinating first scene: Runner up in a tree and hiding from a wolf whilst trying to get his bearings and figure out a way to dispatch the wolf with the limited skills and commands he has at his disposal.

However, my favorite moment had to be what I will simply refer to as "the betrayal". IT comes at such a late point in the book that it almost takes the reader by surprise, and there is real frustration felt as the scene plays out...the reader knows Runner's capabilities and feels his frustration in being helpless nonetheless.

Which scene was your favorite?

The most vivid scene for me was the last one. The author does a very good job describing it in so much detail that I found myself wincing as I pictured it in my mind. From the setting to the characters involved to the actions they were taking, the whole scene was very surreal and easily pictured in my mind.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

"Otherlife: Death by Memory"
