Historia
For nearly a century, the Rikers Island jail complex has stood on a 413-acre manmade island in the East River of New York. Today it is the largest correctional facility in the city, housing eight active jails and thousands of incarcerated individuals who have not yet been tried. It is also one of the most controversial and notorious jails in America. Part on-the-ground reporting, part deep social and architectural history, These Walls is an eye-opening look at Rikers Island and the American justice system—and a challenge to our long-held beliefs about what constitutes power and justice.

Eye-opening reflections on our incarceration system
Revisado: 11-22-23
I learned a lot about the jail system and how it has evolved and about the people who are trying to re-create a prison environment that includes true rehabilitation in many forms. it’s a good read and it’s an informative read. Thought provoking!

Didn’t realize this was a pornographic novel
Revisado: 06-04-22
Fairly engaging. but predictable story line. It was more of a fairytale , save the heroine story. And the very descriptive sex scenes should have come with some warning to the reader that it was half story -half porno.

At the end of the Second World War, Cyril Conroy combines luck and a single canny investment to begin an enormous real estate empire, propelling his family from poverty to enormous wealth. His first order of business is to buy the Dutch House, a lavish estate in the suburbs outside of Philadelphia. Meant as a surprise for his wife, the house sets in motion the undoing of everyone he loves. Historia
Young Hiram Walker was born into bondage. When his mother was sold away, Hiram was robbed of all memory of her - but was gifted with a mysterious power. Years later, when Hiram almost drowns in a river, that same power saves his life. This brush with death births an urgency in Hiram and a daring scheme: to escape from the only home he’s ever known. So begins an unexpected journey that takes Hiram from the corrupt grandeur of Virginia’s proud plantations to desperate guerrilla cells in the wilderness, from the coffin of the South to dangerously idealistic movements in the North.

An Illuminating Perspective
Revisado: 10-24-19
Never have I read a book about the days of slavery that felt so real. I was aware of the underground railroad. I was aware of slavery and the abusive masters. But this novel gave me a perspective from many points of view, particularly that of the tasked slaves. But I also learned about the low whites and the high whites and they are parts that they played along with their thoughts and their motives. I learned of the complexity of the underground railroad and the motives for different groups. I also was able to think about the adjustments that freed slaves made when they were finally sent to free states. And even in those free states there was a danger and hardship even though freedom was such a gift. This book is poetically written and it was hard for me to put it down. I feel like I learned so much.

Historia
Social media comedian Heather Land uses her trademark sassy, laugh-out-loud humor to remind us of the many ways that real life can be really funny. Heather Land has something to say about almost everything in life - the unbelievable, inconceivable, and downright frustrating - and why she “ain’t doin’ it.” In her first book, Heather shines a light on the (occasional) ridiculousness of life through a series of hilarious essays, dishing on everything from Walmart and ex-husbands to Southern beauty pageants and unfortunate trips to the gynecologist.

Historia
Gerry Brooks is an elementary school principal turned YouTube celebrity who entertains K-12 teachers, administrators, and parents across the country. He tells jokes with the kind of mocking humor that gets a laugh yet can be safely shared in school. After all, even great schools have bad days - when lesson plans fall through, disgruntled parents complain, kids throw temper tantrums because they have to use the same spoon for their applesauce and mashed potatoes, and, of course, dealing with...The Horror! The Horror!...dreaded assessments.

As a retired principal, I thought this book was fantastic. A lot of common sense reminders and a little bit of humor for teachers, principals, parents, cafeteria ladies, secretaries, and all schools staff. A great book for any educator, particularly a new educator or a clueless legislator!
