The pacing lacked engagement

I adore both Barbara Michaels and Barbara Rosenblat. But this story was eh. The pacing lacked her usual sense of drive that makes a reader want to keep going. Instead, it took me an incredibly long time to make my way through. 15 minutes, then a few days later another 20 minutes, etc.

What makes us human?

Expendable humans and a human Buddhist consciousness AI are on salvage mission. The planet may or may not have survivors. Outside contact is lost and survival is tenuous.

Hints of Gothic storytelling. Very atmospheric. Conceptually reminds me of Murderbot Diaries, but with a poet’s heart instead of sarcasm.

Fillion’s reading creates an intimate slow burn.

So pleased I discovered this story and author.

Charming low stake romances

While the stories qualify as stand-alone, each one broadens the reader’s knowledge of the community. The situation with the Rift loosely ties things together.

High Stakes and Charlotte from and center.

Spies and conspiracy. Charlotte and Thomas separated and having to trust the other is okay.

Probably the lowest amount of character self-reflection in the series. (I enjoy the self-reflection, but I know others are less keen about it.)

Creepy, fast paced, and over the top.

It’s creepy fun. Listening to Quinto do various facets of a character was well done and creepy. The story moves fast, the sense of time passing doesn’t quite keep up. I would have liked more building tension rather than the amount of dumb luck avoiding discovery. But even when over the top, still creepy.

Modern Noir

I was thrilled to see this third short. Appreciate the inclusion in the background of what a pandemic does within this one big difference world.

I was a little lost with who benefited and who suffered from the crypto info, but still love the noir of a mostly ethical person who has friends on both sides of the law.

Slow start but worth it

The lawyer (Sebastian?) has a case, Hester is in a new private nursing assignment. William Monk doesn’t show up for quite a while.

While both plots are sort of interesting, I kept asking “Where is this going? Then a big reveal happens and things do get interesting.

It explores the role of women in society. Questions why roles are so strict. It’s about women who want to - or reinvent themselves.
